    Stats:

For the week ending December 7, 2019, here are the stats:

    Percentage of revenue (MPN):
    Blu-ray vs DVD: 43.43% vs 56.57%

Blu-ray sales total spending: $43.15 million
DVD sales total spending: $56.21 million

    These stats available from here:

    Top 10:

A very quiet week for new releases, but a relatively big selling week because it's the Cyber Monday sales week.

The one and only new release in the top 20 actually did well on Blu-ray, getting to the top of the Blu-ray sales chart quite easily. Game of Thrones: The Complete Eighth Season was that new release.

Comparing this Cyber Monday with the last one - Blu-ray sales dropped slightly ($47m to $43m), while DVD sales remained largely steady ($57m to $56m). Unit sales for both Blu-ray and DVD were actually up, suggesting that discounting is what caused the overall revenue drop.

This week's Ultra HD Blu-ray report: 'Game of Thrones: The Complete Eighth Season' was available on 4K, the first for a GoT season release I think. 9 titles out of this week's top 10 had UHD editions.

The complete top 10 chart is below (new releases in bold, Blu-ray exclusives are denoted by *, UHD releases denoted by +):
    1. Game of Thrones: The Complete Eighth Season+
    2. Spider-Man: Far From Home+
    3. Angel Has Fallen+
    4. Toy Story 4+
    5. John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum+
    6. Avengers: Endgame+
    7. The Lion King+
    8. Aquaman+
    9. Harry Potter Complete 8-Film Collection
    10. Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw+

Blu-ray, Ultra HD Blu-ray Sales Share:

BD sales share for a title is the percentage of disc packages sold for this movie that contained the Blu-ray edition of the film (including combos, and Ultra HD editions). So a BD sales share of 60% indicates that 60% of disc packages sold for this particular film contained the Blu-ray edition for this film, and so anything over 50% means that the Blu-ray version of the film was more popular than the DVD version.

For the week's sole new release, 'GoT: S8', it managed a BD sales share of 52.60% and a UHD sales share of 10.00% - all quite respectable for a season box set.

Blu-ray sales increased by $0.8m (up 1.9%), with unit sales up 18.4%.

DVD sales decreased by $0.06m (down 0.1%), with unit sales up 2.9%.

This meant $0.74 million more in combined revenue for the week.

Blu-ray's market share increased from 42.94% to 43.43%.

For the week ending December 14, 2019, here are the stats:

      Percentage of revenue (MPN):
      Blu-ray vs DVD: 43.15% vs 56.85%

Blu-ray sales total spending: $40.77 million
DVD sales total spending: $53.71 million

      Top 10:

Blu-ray and DVD revenue continued to drop from the highs set by Black Friday despite the release of three titles that did quite well at the box office for their respective genres.

It: Chapter Two was the week's top-selling new release and overall top-seller, although it was only slightly ahead of the number two top-seller (and new release also), Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. The Best Buy 4K exclusive 'It: 2-Film Collection' also sold enough copies to get into the top 20, at 14th place.

The only other new release in the top 20 was Hustlers, getting a 7th place finish.

This week's Ultra HD Blu-ray report: Amazingly, all four new releases in the top 20 were available on 4K (or exclusively on 4K). Every single title in this week's top 10 had UHD editions.

The complete top 10 chart is below (new releases in bold, Blu-ray exclusives are denoted by *, UHD releases denoted by +):
      1. It: Chapter Two+
      2. Once Upon a Time in Hollywood+
      3. Game of Thrones: The Complete Eighth Season+

Out of this week's new releases, it was actually 'Once Upon a Time in Hollywood' that had the best BD sales share, with 72.38%. 'It: Chapter Two' got 62.59%, while 'Hustlers' managed to get 52.15%.

For the 4K editions, 'Once Upon a Time in Hollywood' was again on top with an amazing UHD sales share of 21.34% (more than 1 in 5 people opted for the 4K edition over the standard Blu-ray or DVD editions!), followed by 'It: Chapter Two' with 14.72% and 'Hustlers' with 7.31%.

Despite the three relatively big releases this week, it was another "all red" week in which all the metrics below were worse off than compared to the same week a year ago (which incidentally was the week 'The Equalizer 2', 'Smallfoot' and 'Peppermint' were released, hardly huge sellers, to be honest).

Blu-ray sales decreased by $10.32m (down 20.2%), with unit sales down 25.8%.

DVD sales decreased by $12.6m (down 19.0%), with unit sales down 23.7%.

This meant $22.92 million less in combined revenue for the week.

Blu-ray's market share decreased from 43.52% to 43.15%.

        Top 10:

There were five new releases in the top 10, and the holiday sales period all helped to bring Blu-ray revenue over $50 million again.

The best-selling of the new releases was Rambo: Last Blood, narrowly outselling Downton Abbey: The Motion Picture, which incidentally was the top seller on DVD ahead of 'Rambo'.

Abominable got 3rd, while Ad Astra was in 6th place.

And finally in 8th was Overcomer.

This week's Ultra HD Blu-ray report: 'Rambo: Last Blood', 'Abominable' and 'Ad Astra' all had UHD editions. 8 titles out of this week's top 10 had UHD editions.

'Downton Abbey: The Motion Picture' got 43% while 'Overcomer' was at 38%.

'Abominable' also had a 3D edition, but it only accounted for 0.25% of all sales for this movie.

For the 4K editions, 'Ad Astra' once again led the way with a UHD sales share of 18.43%. 'Rambo: Last Blood' got 13.09% and 'Abominable' got 4%.

          Top 10:

The last full week of 2019 yielded no new releases in the top 20, but sales were still relatively strong thanks to some pre-Christmas shopping and post-Christmas bargain hunting. In fact, the make up of the top 10 is exactly the same as last week, with the order only slightly different.

Compared to the same week last year, DVD sales dropped slightly, but Blu-ray sales had a bigger drop. This seems to a trend, especially for the second half of the year and suggests something a little bit more concerning - that DVD sales have largely bottomed out, but Blu-ray sales have just started the slide.

This week's Ultra HD Blu-ray report: 8 titles out of this week's top 10 had UHD editions.

The complete top 10 chart is below (new releases in bold, Blu-ray exclusives are denoted by *, UHD releases denoted by +):

            Top 10:

The first week of 2020 has been a quiet one from a Blu-ray and DVD sales perspective, as is the case every start of a new year, but with Blu-ray sales slipping below $20 million and Blu-ray market share almost dropping below 40%, it's definitely one of the quietest January weeks on record (see below for a comparison with the same week from a year ago).

Not a single new release was present in the top 20 again, which might account for some of the below-par results.

This week's Ultra HD Blu-ray report: 8 titles out of this week's top 10 had UHD editions.

The complete top 10 chart is below (new releases in bold, Blu-ray exclusives are denoted by *, UHD releases denoted by +):

Another all red week. It seems to suggest that Blu-ray and DVD sales have slowed down this year compared to the last one. While this may be true, the fact that there were actually two new releases in the top 10, 'Night School' and 'Bad Times at the El Royale', may have something to do with it too.

Blu-ray sales decreased by $7.9m (down 29.5%), with unit sales down 30.2%.

DVD sales decreased by $6.31m (down 18.4%), with unit sales down 22.7%.

The only other new release in the top 10 was The Lighthouse in 3rd place.

                Top 10:

Maleficent: Mistress of Evil was the best selling new release for the week, easily selling almost twice as many copies of last week's number one, Joker.

The third place was also occupied by a new release in the form of Gemini Man.

The next new release was in 6th place, Dragon Ball Super: Part 10, and the last new release in the top 20 was Jexi in 17th.

This week's Ultra HD Blu-ray report: Both 'Maleficent' and 'Gemini Man' were available on UHD. 8 titles out of this week's top 10 had UHD editions.

The complete top 10 chart is below (new releases in bold, Blu-ray exclusives are denoted by *, UHD releases denoted by +):
                1. Maleficent: Mistress of Evil+
                2. Joker+
                3. Gemini Man+

Of this week's new releases, Dragon Ball Super: Part 10 had the best BD sales share, with 75.66%.

'Maleficent: Mistress of Evil' wasn't too far behind with 74.83%, while 'Gemini Man' was a bit further behind at 59.88%.

On UHD, it was 'Gemini Man' that had the better (UHD) sales share, with 15.75% of all sales including the 4K UHD version of the movie. 'Maleficent: Mistress of Evil' got 9.99%.

Blu-ray and DVD sales remain largely unchanged despite the release of four titles in the top 20, including the newly crowned Academy Awards Best Picture winner, Parasite.

'Parasite' itself was not the best selling new release of the week though (it came 5th), that honor fell to Terminator: Dark Fate, finishing easily in first place above last week's number one 'Zombieland: Double Tap'.

Harriet was in 7th place, while Motherless Brooklyn was in 13th.

                            Top 10:

A huge release in the form of Frozen II helped Blu-ray sales rise of $40 million, and helped it become one of the best weeks of 2020 so far. A Target exclusive 'Frozen 2-Movie Collection' was also in the top 10, at 9th.

Knives Out in second place was also a new release, although it only sold just slightly over a tenth as many copies as 'Frozen II'.

There was just one other new release in the top 20, and that was Color Out of Space in 6th place.

This week's Ultra HD Blu-ray report: All of the new releases mentioned above had UHD editions. 9 titles out of this week's top 10 had UHD editions.

This time last year was the time for another big animated hit in the form of 'Ralph Breaks the Internet' (along with the 4K re-release of 'The Little Mermaid'). Still, 'Frozen II' was a bigger release it seems, with Blu-ray revenue rising 4.9% compared to the same week last year.

Blu-ray sales increased by $2.12m (up 4.9%), with unit sales up 0.2%.

An "all red" week in which every metric below was worse off than when compared to the same week a year ago. At that time, 'Creed II' was released, and obviously we also didn't have a major disease outbreak to contend with. Going forwards, it will be interesting to see what kind of effect the current crisis has on disc sales - with most sales happening online these days and with many people stuck at home with nothing to do, perhaps sales might even go up!

Blu-ray sales decreased by $8.13m (down 25.4%), with unit sales down 24.4%.

Blu-ray sales continued to drop compared to recent weeks despite the release of Spies in Disguise and 3 other new releases in the top 20.

'Spies in Disguise' only sold enough copies to get a second-place finish, behind recent bestseller 'Frozen II'.

Uncut Gems was the next best selling new release, in 4th place.

Charlie’s Angels continued its disappointing performance run with a 6th place finish.

                                Bombshell finished in 8th place.

This week's Ultra HD Blu-ray report: Both 'Spies in Disguise' and 'Charlie’s Angels' got UHD editions. 8 titles in this week's top 10 had UHD editions.

The complete top 10 chart is below (new releases in bold, Blu-ray exclusives are denoted by *, UHD releases denoted by +):

Blu-ray, Ultra HD Blu-ray Sales Share:

BD sales share for a title is the percentage of disc packages sold for this movie that contained the Blu-ray edition of the film (including combos, and Ultra HD editions). So a BD sales share of 60% indicates that 60% of disc packages sold for this particular film contained the Blu-ray edition for this film, and so anything over 50% means that the Blu-ray version of the film was more popular than the DVD version.

Out of this week's previously mentioned new releases, 'Uncut Gems' had the best BD sales share of 70.01%.

'Spies in Disguise' wasn't too far behind in 64.65%, and 'Charlie’s Angels' was even closer behind at 64.57%. 'Bombshell' got 58.09%.

On 4K, it was actually 'Charlie’s Angels' that had the best UHD sales share of 14.23%. 'Spies in Disguise' got 7.95%.

Another "all red week", but this one is easy to understand as this time last year, we saw the release of 'Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald'.

Blu-ray sales decreased by $15.74m (down 41.9%), with unit sales down 36.1%.

DVD sales decreased by $10.89m (down 28.0%), with unit sales down 23.6%.

This meant $26.63 million less in combined revenue for the week.

Blu-ray's market share decreased from 49.13% to 43.80%.
