    Stats:

For the week ending July 4, 2020, here are the stats:

    Percentage of revenue (MPN):
    Blu-ray vs DVD: 35.75% vs 64.25%

Blu-ray sales total spending: $14.25 million
DVD sales total spending: $25.61 million

    These stats available from here:

    Media Play News

    Top 10:

Blu-ray revenue dropped to the lowest level since September 27th, 2009, as the Fourth of July holiday, the Coronavirus resurgence and the lack of new releases all combined to give Blu-ray revenue an unwanted record.

Amazingly, we did have a new release, Force of Nature in second place.

This week's Ultra HD Blu-ray report: Force of Nature wasn't made available on UHD. 9 titles in this week's top 10 had UHD editions.

The complete top 10 chart is below (new releases in bold, Blu-ray exclusives are denoted by *, UHD releases denoted by +):
    1. Sonic the Hedgehog+
    2. Force of Nature
    3. Onward+
    4. Stranger Things+
    5. Star Wars: Episode IX - The Rise of Skywalker+
    6. The Call of the Wild+
    7. 1917+
    8. Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw+
    9. Birds of Prey and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn+
    10. The Invisible Man+

Blu-ray, Ultra HD Blu-ray Sales Share:

BD sales share for a title is the percentage of disc packages sold for this movie that contained the Blu-ray edition of the film (including combos, and Ultra HD editions). So a BD sales share of 60% indicates that 60% of disc packages sold for this particular film contained the Blu-ray edition for this film, and so anything over 50% means that the Blu-ray version of the film was more popular than the DVD version.

'Force of Nature' only managed a Blu-ray sales share of 39.30%

Blu-ray sales decreased by $6.99m (down 32.9%), with unit sales down 31.9%.

DVD sales decreased by $3.39m (down 11.7%), with unit sales down 14.3%.

This meant $10.38 million less in combined revenue for the week.

Blu-ray's market share decreased from 42.28% to 35.75%.

For the week ending July 11, 2020, here are the stats:

      Percentage of revenue (MPN):
      Blu-ray vs DVD: 42.84% vs 57.16%

Blu-ray sales total spending: $20.21 million
DVD sales total spending: $26.97 million

      These stats available from here:

      Top 10:

We finally have a notable release, the straight to premium SVOD animated hit, Trolls World Tour. It was easily the top selling title for the week, outsold 'Sonic the Hedgehog' (the previous major release, released all the way back in May) by more than 19 times.

Even the Trolls 2-Movie Collection managed to get a second place finish, although very far away from the top seller.

The Criterion edition of the 1953 The War of the Worlds was the only other new Blu-ray in the top 20, coming in at 15th.

Thanks to the new release, this was the best week since the end of May (when Sonic was released).

This week's Ultra HD Blu-ray report: 'Trolls World Tour' was available on UHD. 8 titles in this week's top 10 had UHD editions.

The complete top 10 chart is below (new releases in bold, Blu-ray exclusives are denoted by *, UHD releases denoted by +):
      1. Trolls World Tour+
      2. Trolls 2-Movie Collection
      3. Sonic the Hedgehog+
      4. Force of Nature
      5. Star Wars: Episode IX - The Rise of Skywalker+
      6. The Call of the Wild+
      7. Onward+
      8. 1917+
      9. Dolittle+
      10. Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw+

'Trolls World Tour' got 61% for BD sales share and 6.11% for UHD sales share. It even had a 3D version, which did atrociously bad like most 3D releases these days, with only a sales share of 0.02% (that's only 2 copies of the 3D edition sold for every 10,000 copies of all disc formats for the movie).

This "all red week" was harder to take since 'Pet Sematary' shouldn't be a bigger hit than 'Trolls World Tour'. But the fact that hardly any new releases were released recently compared to the likes of 'Captain Marvel' and 'Dumbo' that were still selling well this time last year, is what really caused this week's relatively poor showing.

Blu-ray sales decreased by $4.26m (down 17.4%), with unit sales down 25.8%.

DVD sales decreased by $1.54m (down 5.4%), with unit sales down 11.0%.

This meant $5.80 million less in combined revenue for the week.

Blu-ray's market share decreased from 46.19% to 42.84%.

        Stats:

For the week ending July 18, 2020, here are the stats:

        Percentage of revenue (MPN):
        Blu-ray vs DVD: 42.51% vs 57.49%

Blu-ray sales total spending: $18.63 million
DVD sales total spending: $25.20 million

        These stats available from here:

        Top 10:

There were two new releases in the top 20, which is considered quite a lot these days. The best selling of these was Criterion's Bruce Lee: His Greatest Hits, in 2nd place, and also from Criterion, the Russian classic Come and See.

Otherwise, it was quiet again and the Blu-ray revenue figures reflect this.

This week's Ultra HD Blu-ray report: Neither of these new releases were available on 4K as we continue to wait for Criterion to embrace UHD. 8 titles in this week's top 10 had UHD editions.

The complete top 10 chart is below (new releases in bold, Blu-ray exclusives are denoted by *, UHD releases denoted by +):
        1. Trolls World Tour+
        2. Bruce Lee: His Greatest Hits

        6. Onward+
        7. The Call of the Wild+
        8. Trolls 2-Movie Collection

'Bruce Lee: His Greatest Hits' was no match for 'Shazam!' it seems. I mean at this point, it's kind of sadistic to even make the comparison to last year when the world was normal and we actually had new movies on Blu-ray.

Blu-ray sales decreased by $15.74m (down 45.8%), with unit sales down 41.8%.

DVD sales decreased by $7.87m (down 23.8%), with unit sales down 17.6%.

          Top 10:

The release of Scoob! on Blu-ray wasn't enough to stop Blu-ray revenue falling from the two week ago "high" set by 'Trolls World Tour'.

We actually had quiet a few new releases this week, but other than 'Scoob!', non were close to being A-list.

Capone did the best out of the rest with a 4th place finish, while Resistance was 6th.

Survive the Night got 7th, while the Criterion Collection edition of Marriage Story was 8th.

And all the way down in 15th was the 4K re-release of Spartacus.

This week's Ultra HD Blu-ray report: Other than 'Spartacus', only 'Scoob!' was available on 4K. Only 4 titles in this week's top 10 had UHD editions.

The complete top 10 chart is below (new releases in bold, Blu-ray exclusives are denoted by *, UHD releases denoted by +):
          1. Scoob!+

          4. Capone

          6. Resistance
          7. Survive the Night
          8. Marriage Story
          9. Star Wars: Episode IX - The Rise of Skywalker+
          10. Harry Potter Complete 8-Film Collection

Of the new releases this week, 'Resistance' actually had the best BD sales share with 49.49%, followed by 'Capone' with 48.34% and then 'Scoob!' with 45.65%. 'Survive the Night' got 45.18%. The fact that none of these releases got over 50% suggests that these weren't the usual high sellers on Blu-ray.

              Top 10:

Blu-ray revenue dropped again, to the second lowest set of weekly results in 2020, while weekly Blu-ray market share dropped below 40% as well.

This is not surprising considering the lack of new releases, with Gundala in 15th being the only new release in the top 20.

This week's Ultra HD Blu-ray report: 'Gundala' wasn't available on 4K. 7 titles in this week's top 10 had UHD editions.

New releases from this week last year included 'UglyDolls' and 'Long Shot', hardly the most popular titles, but Blu-ray sales were still up. The only silver lining is that DVD sales are declining at a slower rate.

Blu-ray sales decreased by $5.68m (down 27.3%), with unit sales down 30.8%.

DVD sales decreased by $2.7m (down 10.0%), with unit sales down 14.9%.

                Top 10:

Blu-ray revenue dropped to its lowest level since September 27, 2009, as the lack of new releases has seriously hurt physical media revenue sales.

The only new release was His Dark Materials: The Complete First Season in 12th place.

Aquaman makes a return to the top 10.

                  Top 10:

We have a new record low, with Blu-ray sales at their lowest levels since September 13, 2009. The fact that the only new release in the top 20 was the 45th anniversary re-release of The Rocky Horror Picture Show, which came in 6th on the Blu-ray top sellers chart.

'Bad Boys for Life' returns to the top 10.

That was pretty much it in terms of new releases in the top 20, as the COVID-19 release lull continues to bite.

This week's Ultra HD Blu-ray report: No 4K new releases in the top 20. 8 titles in this week's top 10 had UHD editions.

The complete top 10 chart is below (new releases in bold, Blu-ray exclusives are denoted by *, UHD releases denoted by +):
                  1. Trolls World Tour+
                  2. Scoob!+
                  3. Sonic the Hedgehog+
                  4. 1917+
                  5. Bad Boys for Life+
                  6. The Rocky Horror Picture Show
                  7. Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw+
                  8. Star Wars: Episode IX - The Rise of Skywalker+
                  9. Bloodshot+
                  10. Harry Potter Complete 8-Film Collection

'The Rocky Horror Picture Show' managed a BD sales share of 65.92%.

In our new regular feature where we pine for days past, this time last year we had 'Avengers: Endgame' to look forward to as the new release for the week. Just think about that. Avengers: Endgame versus the Blu-ray re-release of a 45 year-old movie (even if it is a classic).

Blu-ray sales decreased by $44.67m (down 77.7%), with unit sales down 70.7%.

DVD sales decreased by $12.08m (down 35.2%), with unit sales down 28.7%.

This meant $56.75 million less in combined revenue for the week.

Blu-ray's market share decreased from 62.63% to 36.58%.

                    Top 10:

Blu-ray revenue rose slightly off last week's record low, as three new releases in the top 10 helped to list sales slightly.

The Outpost was in 3rd place and the Blu-ray/4K re-release of Flash Gordon was in 5th place.

The poor results was largely due to the lack of new releases, with The King of Staten Island being the only new release in the top 10 (coming in at only 3rd), with the Steelbook edition of Kiki’s Delivery Service being the only other new release in the top 20 (at 13th).

                        Top 10:

Blu-ray revenue improved slightly, just slightly, thanks to a couple of 4K re-releases in the top 10.

Beetlejuice and The Goonies were both made available on 4K for the first time, and came in 1st and and 2nd.

Also new was Rogue in 3rd place and Pitch Black: Limited Edition in 10th.

Children of the Sea was the only other new release, in 18th.

A few Chadwick Boseman got back into the top 10 following the tragic death of the actor, with Black Panther in 3rd and 21 Bridges in 8th.

This week's Ultra HD Blu-ray report: Other than the 4K re-releases, none of the other new releases were made available on UHD. 5 titles in this week's top 10 had UHD editions.

The five Blu-ray/4K only releases aside, 'Rogue' just failed to get over 50% in BD sales share with 49.66%.

For UHD sales share, 65.14% of 'The Goonies' sales were for the 4K version, while it was 63.81% for 'Beetlejuice'.

For the week ending September 12, 2020, here are the stats:

DVD sales total spending: $21.91 million

                          These stats available from here:

                          Media Play News

                          Top 10:

Despite a healthy number of new, re-releases and Blu-ray exclusives in the top 20, Blu-ray revenue was largely unchanged from the low level recorded in the previous couple of weeks.

DC Universe animated feature film Superman: Man of Tomorrow was the best-selling out of all the new releases, earning it a top spot finish on the Blu-ray sales chart. It was a Blu-ray only release, with both a standard Blu-ray version and a 4K Blu-ray version.

The 4K re-release of the original animated version of Ghost in the Shell was in a distant second place.

The Target exclusive Rob Zombie Trilogy Blu-ray box set wasn't too far behind in 3rd place - the general release version is coming in a few week's time. This mean the top 3 were all Blu-ray exclusives.

5th place was occupied by True History of the Kelly Gang, while the Best Buy exclusive The Incredible Hulk (2008 version), another Blu-ray exclusive, was in 7th.

The 60th anniversary edition of Psycho was in 14th place, just ahead of the 4K The Alfred Hitchcock Collection. Both were Blu-ray exclusives.

Hocus Pocus returns to the top 10, as per Halloween tradition. The 4K version arrives the week after the one reported on here. 2020's 'The Invisible Man' also returns to the top 10, likely for similar Halloween related reasons.

This week's Ultra HD Blu-ray report: Other than the 4K re-releases, only 'Superman: Man of Tomorrow' was available on UHD. 5 titles in this week's top 10 had UHD editions.

The complete top 10 chart is below (new releases in bold, Blu-ray exclusives are denoted by *, UHD releases denoted by +):
                          1. *Superman: Man of Tomorrow+
                          2. *Ghost in the Shell+
                          3. *Rob Zombie Trilogy

                          7. *The Incredible Hulk+
                          8. Hocus Pocus

Only 'True History of the Kelly Gang' wasn't a Blu-ray exclusive, and it had a BD sales share of 40.95%.

For UHD sales share, only 'Superman: Man of Tomorrow' wasn't a 4K exclusive and it got a UHD sales share of 13.43%.

Blu-ray revenue stayed at record low levels as new release Outlander: Season Five was the top selling title for the week.

It was just head of Weathering With You in 2nd place, and the Blu-ray only re-releases of Shivers and Little Monsters in 5th and 6th.

That was it for new releases though. '1917' made a return to the top 10.

This week's Ultra HD Blu-ray report: None of this week's new releases in the top 20 were available on UHD. 5 titles in this week's top 10 had UHD editions.

The complete top 10 chart is below (new releases in bold, Blu-ray exclusives are denoted by *, UHD releases denoted by +):

Another unwanted record as Blu-ray sales dropped to levels not seen since August 30, 2009.

This is despite two new releases and two 4K re-releases in the top 10, including Rick and Morty: Season 4 in top spot.

The 4K re-release of Full Metal Jacket on 4K helped the title reach second place, while another 4K re-release, Whiplash, was 17th. In between the two was new release The Secret: Dare to Dream, coming in at 6th on the Blu-ray sales chart.

This week's Ultra HD Blu-ray report: The two non 4K only re-releases weren't made available on 4K. Only 3 titles in this week's top 10 had UHD editions.

                                Top 10:

Blu-ray sales continued to decline off of last week's historic lows, but only slightly, as the lack of new releases meant that the only new release in the top 10 was the Best Buy exclusive 4K SteelBook version of The Evil Dead 1 & 2 dual movie pack.

Outside of the top 10, another Best Buy exclusive, the 4K SteelBook version of Mad Max: Fury Road was in 13th. The Criterion release of The Elephant Man was 16th, while the Blu-ray only releaseMy Hero Academia: Season Four, Part One was 18th.

Overall, the top 20 had a very Halloween looking feel to it (Rob Zombie must be rolling in it right now), as is the case this time ever year.

This week's Ultra HD Blu-ray report: Other than the 4K re-releases, none of the other releases had UHD editions. 5 titles in this week's top 10 had UHD editions.

The complete top 10 chart is below (new releases in bold, Blu-ray exclusives are denoted by *, UHD releases denoted by +):
                                1. Hocus Pocus
                                2. Rick and Morty: Season 4
                                3. Sonic the Hedgehog+
                                4. *Beetlejuice+

                                7. The Secret: Dare to Dream

                                9. Joker
                                10. *The Evil Dead 1 & 2+

Only The Criterion release of "The Elephant Man" wasn't a Blu-ray exclusive this week, but it did not get a high enough Blu-ray market share to get into the top 20 (so below 31.71%).
