    Stats:

For the week ending September 24, 2022, here are the stats:

    Percentage of revenue (MPN):
    Blu-ray vs DVD: 41.84% vs 58.16%

Blu-ray sales total spending: $11.15 million
DVD sales total spending: $15.50 million

These stats are available from here:

    Top 10:

Blu-ray revenue hovered around the $11 million mark again, as we have a week without any compelling new releases yet again.

Outlander: Season Six was the best-selling new release, coming in at 4th. It was joined in the top 10 by the 4K release of The Lost Boys in 6th and Poltergeist in 8th.

Outside of the top 10, we have Dragon Ball Super: The Complete Series in 18th and Wrong Place in 19th.

This week's Ultra HD Blu-ray report: Apart from the 4K exclusive releases, neither "Outlander" nor "Dragon Ball Super: The Complete Series" or "Wrong Place" were made available on 4K. 8 titles out of this week's top 10 had UHD editions.

The complete top 10 chart is below (new releases in bold, Blu-ray exclusives are denoted by *, UHD releases denoted by +):
    1. Elvis+
    2. Minions: The Rise of Gru+
    3. Jurassic World Dominion+
    4. Outlander: Season Six
    5. Where the Crawdads Sing
    6. *The Lost Boys+
    7. Lightyear+
    8. *Poltergeist+
    9. Spider-Man: No Way Home+
    10. The Batman+

Blu-ray, Ultra HD Blu-ray Sales Share:

The BD sales share is the percentage of disc packages sold for that contained the titles's Blu-ray edition (including combos, and Ultra HD editions) for a particular title. So a BD sales share of 60% indicates that 60% of disc packages sold for this particular film contained the Blu-ray edition for this film, and so anything over 50% means that the Blu-ray version of the film was more popular than the DVD version.

"Outlander: Season Six" managed a BD sales share of 45.20%. Due to the pandemic and everything, we had to go back two years to when season 5 was released - that particular release managed a BD sales share of 43% - so a slight improvement this year.

"Wrong Place" only got a BD sales share of 15.30%.

The stats for the week ending September 25, 2021 are as follows. Some small adjustments to the data posted last year (based on more recent updates) have been made and are shown below.

Again, this week was up against a relatively big week this time last year, when "F9: The Fast Saga" was released on home video. This partially explains why everything is down compared to a year ago, but there seems more to it than that - physical media just isn't what people are after anymore.

Blu-ray sales decreased by $6.72m (down 37.6%), with unit sales down 40.7%.

DVD sales decreased by $6.52m (down 29.6%), with unit sales down 30.2%.

This meant $13.24 million less in combined revenue for the week.

Blu-ray's market share decreased from 44.80% to 41.84%

      Stats:

For the week ending October 1, 2022, here are the stats:

      Percentage of revenue (MPN):
      Blu-ray vs DVD: 41.82% vs 58.18%

Blu-ray sales total spending: $10.91 million
DVD sales total spending: $15.18 million

      Top 10:

The box office smash Thor: Love and Thunder was the top-seller for the week, but despite the might and magic of Marvel, Blu-ray weekly revenue was actually down compared to the previous week. With most Disney/Marvel movies being released on Disney+ prior to their home video debut, it has really taken a huge bite out of disc sales of these movies. Take the previous Thor movie, "Thor: Ragnarok" - when it was released, Blu-ray revenue rose from the then average of around $25 million per week to more than $57 million. A far cry from the less than $11 million for the new Thor movie, despite their box office receipts not being hugely different. The streaming disruption is here.

There were three other new releases in the top 20, with The Munsters was the best-selling of which, coming in second (a distant second to "Thor: Love and Thunder").

The rest of the two were 4K only releases: I Know What You Did Last Summer in 10th and Evil Dead in 11th.

This week's Ultra HD Blu-ray report: "Thor: Love and Thunder" had a 4K edition, "The Munsters" did not. 7 titles out of this week's top 10 had UHD editions.

The complete top 10 chart is below (new releases in bold, Blu-ray exclusives are denoted by *, UHD releases denoted by +):

"Thor: Love and Thunder" managed a BD sales share of 66.30%, while "The Munsters" got 55.87%.

On 4K, "Thor" did well again with a massive 31.40% 4K sales share - that means a third of of buyers chose the 4K edition over the standard Blu-ray or DVD editions.

        Top 10:

Blu-ray and DVD revenue remained steady as DC League of Super-Pets was the best-selling new release for the week - but it only came second, behind "Thor: Love and Thunder".

The 4K SteelBook release of Fright Night was 3rd, and the Shout Factory 4K releases of Army of Darkness was 4th.

Star Trek: Picard - Season Two was 6th.

More 4K releases were in the top 20, Scream 2 was 7th and Bram Stoker’s Dracula was 11th, and The Halloween 3-Movie (1995-2002) 4K Collection was 13th.

Despite the numerous releases, and the number of 4K releases, Blu-ray revenue was largely flat - pre-pandemic, this wouldn't have been the case.

This week's Ultra HD Blu-ray report: "DC League of Super-Pets" had a 4K edition, "Star Trek: Picard — Season Two" did not. 8 titles out of this week's top 10 had UHD editions.

"Star Trek: Picard — Season Two" managed a BD sales share of 51.56%, which was just ahead of "DC League of Super-Pets", which managed 50.96%.

The only release this week that had simultaneous 4K and standard Blu-ray versions was "DC League of Super-Pets", and so it was the only one that had a 4K sales share - 9.12%.

          Top 10:

A slew of new releases in the top 10 helped Blu-ray revenue rise to recent highs.

The actual highest-ranked new release was Beast, even though it only came 5th.

The Criterion release of Lost Highway was the next new release, in 8th place. Mortal Kombat Legends: Snow Blind in 10th rounded off the top 10.

Outside of the top 10, the 4K releases of the individual "Godfather" movies helped The Godfather. And finally, in 19th, was the Criterion release of the classic movie Arsenic and Old Lace./\

This week's Ultra HD Blu-ray report: "Lost Highway" and "Mortal Kombat Legends: Snow Blind", all had 4K editions. 8 titles out of this week's top 10 had UHD editions.

              Top 10:

Nope was the best-selling new release and the overall top-seller for the week.

The Invitation was the next new release, in 5th place.

From the Warner Archives, comes the Blu-ray version of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.

Outside of the top 10, Titans: The Complete Third Season in 12th, and the impressive Columbia Classics 4K Ultra HD Collection Vol. 3 box set.

Despite these new releases, weekly Blu-ray revenue dropped compared to last week.

This week's Ultra HD Blu-ray report: "Nope" was the only new release that had a 4K UHD edition. 7 titles out of this week's top 10 had UHD editions.

The complete top 10 chart is below (new releases in bold, Blu-ray exclusives are denoted by *, UHD releases denoted by +):

Blu-ray, Ultra HD Blu-ray Sales Share:

The BD sales share is the percentage of disc packages sold for that contained the titles's Blu-ray edition (including combos, and Ultra HD editions) for a particular title. So a BD sales share of 60% indicates that 60% of disc packages sold for this particular film contained the Blu-ray edition for this film, and so anything over 50% means that the Blu-ray version of the film was more popular than the DVD version.

"Nope" had a BD sales share of 75.25%, the best of this week's non-Blu-ray exclusive new releases. "The Invitation" managed to get 55.72%, and "Titans: The Complete Third Season" got 34%.

On 4K, "Nope" had the best 4K sales share, with 42.76% of buyers opting to get the 4K version.

"Nope" was up against "The Suicide Squad" from this time last year and the DC movie clearly came out on top, given the comparison below.

Blu-ray sales decreased by $5.56m (down 35.2%), with unit sales down 36.8%.

DVD sales decreased by $8.23m (down 37.6%), with unit sales down 38.9%.

This meant $13.79 million less in combined revenue for the week.

Blu-ray's market share increased from 41.92% to 42.84%

                Stats:

For the week ending November 5, 2022, here are the stats:

                Percentage of revenue (MPN):
                Blu-ray vs DVD: 51.11% vs 48.89%

Blu-ray sales total spending: $18.69 million
DVD sales total spending: $17.88 million

These stats are available from here:

                Media Play News

                Top 10:

The year's biggest movie, Top Gun: Maverick, finally arrives on home video and it instantly helped Blu-ray revenue rise 82% compared to the previous week, and helped weekly Blu-ray market share to push above 50%. Top Gun 2-Movie Collection also got in on the action, coming in second.

However, for such a big release, Blu-ray sales still seem muted compared to days past. Looking at movies with a similar box office, the original "Black Panther" did less at the box office, but the week in which it was released saw around $50 million in Blu-ray sales. Similarly, "Frozen II" was just released before the worst of the pandemic occurred, and the week it was released saw $45 million in sales. This compares to $18.69 million for this week.

And unlike other titles, "Top Gun: Maverick" had not been made available for streaming on subscription streaming platforms prior to its home media release - however, it does have a set release date on Paramount+ set to December, and perhaps the knowledge that the movie will be available to stream in 6 week's time may have influenced some to skip buying the disc version.

"Top Gun: Maverick" wasn't the only new release this week either, there were quite a few 4K-only releases: National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation was 6th, The Running Man in 8th, Starship Troopers in 9th, A Christmas Story in 10th, and Elf in 11th.

These were all 4K-only releases with no equivalent standard Blu-ray or DVD release.

This week's Ultra HD Blu-ray report: "Top Gun: Maverick" did have a 4K UHD edition. Every title in this week's top 10 had UHD editions!

The complete top 10 chart is below (new releases in bold, Blu-ray exclusives are denoted by *, UHD releases denoted by +):
                1. Top Gun: Maverick+
                2. Top Gun 2-Movie Collection+
                3. Nope+
                4. Bullet Train+
                5. Thor: Love and Thunder+
                6. *National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation+
                7. Jurassic World Dominion+
                8. *The Running Man+
                9. *Starship Troopers+
                10. *A Christmas Story+

"Top Gun: Maverick" was the only new release in the top 20 that had a DVD-only release, and it recorded a Blu-ray sales share of 64.91%.

"Top Gun: Maverick" and "Top Gun 2-Movie Collection" were the only two to have a standard Blu-ray release, and so had 4K sale share figures. The 2-movie release had the better of the 4K sales share, 55.14% versus 25.35% for the new movie alone.

"Top Gun: Maverick" beat "Paw Patrol: The Movie" from the same week last year. No surprises here.

Blu-ray sales increased by $4.64m (up 33.0%), with unit sales up 7.7%.

DVD sales decreased by $4.36m (down 19.6%), with unit sales down 26.7%.

                  Top 10:

A pretty quiet week in terms of new releases, as stores, online and off, start their Black Friday sale events in earnest. This is why a lot of this year's biggest releases have all come back into the top 10, due to discounts and whatnot.

The best-selling new entry into the top 20 was the 4K 80th anniversary release of Casablanca all the way down to 16th place. It was joined by the Blu-ray release of Earth Girls Are Easy in 19th.

So a very quiet week, but Blu-ray revenue held up relatively well due to "Top Gun: Maverick" and the early Black Friday sales.

This week's Ultra HD Blu-ray report: Every title in this week's top 10 had UHD editions!

The complete top 10 chart is below (new releases in bold, Blu-ray exclusives are denoted by *, UHD releases denoted by +):

                  10. Nope+

Both "Casablanca" and "Earth Girls Are Easy" were 4K or Blu-ray only releases, and so they did not have either a Blu-ray or 4K sales share score (or rather, both were at 100%).

This time last year is also when some of the early Black Friday discounts started, and both Blu-ray and DVD sales were down, DVD in particular. It's hard to compare two different sales, so a better comparison would be between the two Black Friday sales weeks coming up soon.

Blu-ray sales decreased by $2.79m (down 15.4%), with unit sales down 27.4%.

DVD sales decreased by $14.58m (down 47.5%), with unit sales down 55.8%.

                    Top 10:

Blu-ray sales remained largely unchanged from the previous week, but DVD sales improved thanks to the build-up to the Black Friday sales.

It was another quiet week in terms of new releases, with only two new entries in the top 20, and one of them was a 4K re-issue.

So the only real new release was Pearl, the "secret" prequel to the excellent "X" - but it only came 8th in the chart.

The 30th-anniversary edition 4K release of Reservoir Dogs was 12th.

Some of this year's biggest movies making a comeback to the top 20 as they join in the sales fun, like "Sonic the Hedgehog 2" and "Everything Everywhere All at Once".

This week's Ultra HD Blu-ray report: "Pearl" did not have a 4K edition. 9 titles out of this week's top 10 had UHD editions.

The complete top 10 chart is below (new releases in bold, Blu-ray exclusives are denoted by *, UHD releases denoted by +):

                    10. Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore+

"Pearl" had an amazing BD sales share of 85.09%, meaning less than 15% of buyers chose to buy the DVD-only edition of the film.

A kind of unfair comparison, because "Pearl" was up against "Jungle Cruise" (and "Candyman") from this time last year. Hence, an "all red" week.

Blu-ray sales decreased by $6.79m (down 29.9%), with unit sales down 31.1%.

                      Top 10:

Another Black Friday sales week, and another lacklustre one. A combination of many BF pre-sales diluting the "big one", and perhaps more importantly, the declining fortunes of physical media (due to streaming), meant that Blu-ray sales were down 23% compared to the last BF week (which itself was already 27% down compared to the previous year). Can you say "steady decline"?

As is the tradition, there weren't a lot of new releases during this time of the year. In fact, the 4K release of Planes, Trains and Automobiles in 13th place was the only new release in the top 20.

We have to go all the way back to before the pandemic to find a Black Friday sales week that actually saw sales increase on the previous year. For the same week in 2019, we had $79.17 in Blu-ray sales and $96.83 in DVD sales. Just try and compare this with the listed sales figures above - 74% down for Blu-ray and 79% down for DVD. Ouch!

                        Top 10:

It's Cyber Monday week, which is basically just a continuation of the Black Friday sales for a couple of more days. As such, there were no new releases in the top 20, but some old favourites returns due to sales and such. One such release was "The Lord of the Rings: The Motion Picture Trilogy" Blu-ray boxset, which jumped from last week's 98th place finish all the way to 7th.

As for how it compares with Cyber Mondays of past? Blu-ray sales were down 21% compared to last year's sale, which was already down 27% compared to 2020. Compared to the last time Blu-ray revenue actually grew from the previous Cyber Monday (this would be all the way back in 2019), Blu-ray sales are down a staggering 59%!

This week's Ultra HD Blu-ray report: Again, every title in this week's top 10 had UHD editions!

The complete top 10 chart is below (new releases in bold, Blu-ray exclusives are denoted by *, UHD releases denoted by +):
                        1. Top Gun: Maverick+
                        2. Jurassic World Dominion+
                        3. The Batman+
                        4. Spider-Man: No Way Home+
                        5. Dune: Part One+
                        6. Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness+
                        7. The Lord of the Rings: The Motion Picture Trilogy+
                        8. Thor: Love and Thunder+
                        9. Ghostbusters: Afterlife+
                        10. Top Gun 2-Movie Collection+

No new releases that had a DVD edition, or a 4K release that also had an equivalent Blu-ray edition, so no need to report on BD and 4K sales share results.

Star Trek: Discovery - Season Four was 6th, while Phil Tippett's Mad God was 20th.

This week's Ultra HD Blu-ray report: "Clerks III", "Star Trek: Discovery - Season Four" and "Mad Dog" all were released without a 4K edition. 8 titles out of this week's top 10 had UHD editions.

                            Top 10:

Four new release movies graced the top 10, and Blu-ray revenue was up slightly because of this and the busy holiday sales period, but physical media sales are down quite significantly compared to pre-pandemic times.

The Woman King was the best-selling new release of the week, but it again failed to out-sell the recent number one, "Top Gun: Maverick" (which might stay number one for quite a while). It was closely followed by Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile in third place.

Interrupting the new release movies was the 4K release of an older one, Highlander in 4th.

Ticket to Paradise was 5th, with yet another new release, Smile in 6th place.

Silent Night, Deadly Night 3-5 Collection was the last new release in 10th, with the 4K release of Coraline in 11th rounding off things in the top 20.

So while Blu-ray revenue improved upon the recent week's, it was nowhere near where what it used to be. Take for example the last Christmas sales period before the pandemic, the same week in 2019 recorded $54.47 million in Blu-ray sales - that's almost two and half times more than this week!

This week's Ultra HD Blu-ray report: Only "Ticket to Paradise" and "Silent Night, Deadly Night 3-5 Collection" were without 4K editions. 7 titles out of this week's top 10 had UHD editions.

The complete top 10 chart is below (new releases in bold, Blu-ray exclusives are denoted by *, UHD releases denoted by +):

So a BD sales share of 60% indicates that 60% of disc packages sold for this particular film contained the Blu-ray edition for this film, and so anything over 50% means that the Blu-ray version of the film was more popular than the DVD version.

Out of this week's non Blu-ray/4K only releases, "Smile" actually had the best BD sales share, with 59.06%. "The Woman King" was the next best, with 52.09%. "Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile" had to settle for 41.53%.

"Ticket to Paradise" didn't even make the BD sales share top 20, with a BD sales share of 37%.

"Smile" again was the leader when it came to 4K sales share, with 14.73%. "The Woman King" wasn't too far behind with 13.41%. "Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile" unfortunately didn't do too well on 4K, with only 2% choosing to buy it over the Blu-ray and DVD versions.

                              Top 10:

Pre-Christmas hits a peak this week with DVD sales jumping to over $30 million for the first time since this time last year. Unfortunately, last year saw over $42 million in DVD sales, which meant there was a 25% drop. The drop was even more precipitous for Blu-ray, dropping some 33%.

We did have a new release, but just one, in the top 20. House of the Dragon: The Complete First Season sold enough copies to earn a second-place finish behind, you guessed it, "Top Gun: Maverick".

The rest of the top 20 was filled with recent new releases and discounted titles, as you would expect.

This week's Ultra HD Blu-ray report: "House of the Dragon: The Complete First Season" did have 4K editions, which wasn't the case for "Game of Thrones" until the last season. 9 titles out of this week's top 10 had UHD editions.

The complete top 10 chart is below (new releases in bold, Blu-ray exclusives are denoted by *, UHD releases denoted by +):
                              1. Top Gun: Maverick+

"House of the Dragon: Season 1" managed to get a BD sales share of 60.94% and a 4K sales share of 26.03%.

                                Top 10:

The post-Christmas sales drop-off is what explains the large drop in sales compared to the previous week.

We usually won't have any particularly well-known new releases for this time of the year, but we did have a big-ish release in the form of Halloween Ends, and it was the top-selling title for the week, displacing "Top Gun: Maverick", which is no easy feat.

There was another new release in the top 10, Terrifier 2 in third, but that was it in terms of the top 20.

The best way to look at a week like this is to compare it to the same week last year, and unfortunately, sales were down again - nearly 28% for Blu-ray and more than 32% for DVD.

This week's Ultra HD Blu-ray report: "Halloween Ends" did have a 4K edition. 9 titles out of this week's top 10 had UHD editions.

The complete top 10 chart is below (new releases in bold, Blu-ray exclusives are denoted by *, UHD releases denoted by +):
                                1. Halloween Ends+
                                2. Top Gun: Maverick+
                                3. Terrifier 2
                                4. House of the Dragon: The Complete First Season+
                                5. The Woman King+
                                6. Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile+
                                7. Jurassic World Dominion+
                                8. Thor: Love and Thunder+
                                9. The Batman+
                                10. Everything Everywhere All at Once+

"Terrifier 2" actually had a better BD sales share than "Halloween Ends", 73.64% versus 65.79%.

"Halloween Ends" actually did well on 4K, with 30.73% of all disc sales belonging to the 4K edition of the film.
