    Stats:

For the week ending 12th January 2013, here are the stats:

    Percentage of revenue:
    Blu-ray vs DVD: 26.36% vs 73.64%

Blu-ray sales total spending: $30.27 million
DVD sales total spending: $84.56 million

    These stats available from here:

    Home Media Magazine

    Top 10:

New releases were available in quantity, if not quality, for the week ending 12th January 2013. Dredd was the week's best selling new release, and marks the first new release title (ie. not a catalogue release) that was available exclusively as a 3D title on the Blu-ray format - there were no 2D Blu-ray versions of the movie.

Dredd only managed to beat second placed Frankenweenie by a small margin though.

Two more new releases were in the Blu-ray top 10. House at the End of the Street managed a 4th place finish, while Hit & Run debuted at 7th.

A couple of other new releases didn't make the Blu-ray top 10. SEAL Team Six: The Raid on Osama bin Laden came in at 12th, while Stolen flopped to a 13th place finish.

Bringing up the rear (phrasing!) was Archer: The Complete Season Three, splooshing in at 17th on the combined Blu-ray and DVD charts, but did not sell enough copies on Blu-ray to make it into the Blu-ray only top 20, falling out into the Danger Zone (OK, I'll stop now).

The complete top 10 chart is below (new releases in bold, and Blu-ray exclusives are denoted by *):
    1. Dredd
    2. Frankenweenie
    3. Looper
    4. House at the End of the Street
    5. Pitch Perfect
    6. The Dark Knight Rises
    7. Hit & Run
    8. Ted
    9. Total Recall (2012)
    10. The Dark Knight Trilogy

    Blu-ray Share:

Of all the new releases, Hit & Run actually had the best BD sales share result, with Blu-ray or combo copies of the film grabbing a 53.39% share of all disc based sales.

Dredd was next best, at 47.99%, but as mentioned earlier, all BD copies of the film included the Blu-ray 3D version, and so its Blu-ray 3D share was 100%. Frankenweenie wasn't too far behind at 47.50%, and it was also available on Blu-ray 3D, but with only a 14% sales share.

As for the rest, House at the End of the Street managed 32%, Archer: The Complete Season Three had 26%, Stolen with 25% and SEAL Team Six: The Raid on Osama bin Laden had 21%.

      Stats:

For the week ending 19th January 2013, here are the stats:

      Percentage of revenue:
      Blu-ray vs DVD: 27.19% vs 72.81%

Blu-ray sales total spending: $32.13 million
DVD sales total spending: $86.02 million

      These stats available from here:

      Home Media Magazine

      Top 10:

Taken 2 stormed to the top of the charts this week, as it easily outsold all other releases, new and old. The release of the sequel also helped the original, Taken, to get back into the top 10.

On DVD at least, the new release that came closest to Taken 2 was The Possession, which ranked 2nd on the combined Blu-ray and DVD charts, but only 5th on the Blu-ray only chart.

Undefeated, another new release, ranked 12th on the Blu-ray and DVD charts, but did not get into the Blu-ray top 20.

Taken 2 aside, it was another quiet week, although Taken 2 did manage to help both Blu-ray and DVD revenue rise compared to last week.

The complete top 10 chart is below (new releases in bold, and Blu-ray exclusives are denoted by *):
      1. Taken 2
      2. Dredd
      3. Frankenweenie
      4. Looper
      5. The Possession
      6. Pitch Perfect
      7. The Dark Knight Rises
      8. Ice Age: Continental Drift
      9. Ted
      10. Taken

      Blu-ray Share:

Taken 2 had a BD sales share of 43.59%, which is respectable, but hardly a record breaker (and probably lower than it should be).

The Possession's 24% BD sales share was the reason why it ranked lower on the Blu-ray only sales charts, despite coming 2nd in the combined charts.

Neither of these new releases were available in Blu-ray 3D.

        Stats:

For the week ending 26th January 2013, here are the stats:

        Percentage of revenue:
        Blu-ray vs DVD: 24.61% vs 75.39%

Blu-ray sales total spending: $25.69 million
DVD sales total spending: $78.68 million

        These stats available from here:

        Home Media Magazine

        Top 10:

Both Blu-ray and DVD revenue fell this week compared to the previous week, but Blu-ray fell a bit more than DVD, and so Blu-ray market share was also down to the lowest level since early November. Seasonally speaking, this is normal.

There were a couple of new releases, but none were what you would call A-list releases, with several direct to TV/video releases, and a few others that, even when added together, did not break $50 million at the box office.

End of Watch was the best performing out of the bunch, and the most popular Blu-ray title for the week ending 26 January.

On the Blu-ray sales chart, Death Race 3: Inferno was the next most popular new release, crossing the finish line in 3rd place.

The Paperboy was the remaining new Blu-ray release in the top 10, coming in at 7th.

There were a couple of other new releases that didn't make the Blu-ray top 10. Madly Madagascar was a DVD only release, while The Men Who Built America and Universal Soldier: Day of Reckoning didn't sell enough copies on Blu-ray to get into the top 20 (they were 18th and 19th respectively on the combined Blu-ray and DVD sales chart).

The complete top 10 chart is below (new releases in bold, and Blu-ray exclusives are denoted by *):
        1. End of Watch
        2. Taken 2
        3. Death Race 3: Inferno
        4. Pitch Perfect
        5. Looper
        6. Frankenweenie
        7. The Paperboy
        8. Finding Nemo
        9. The Dark Knight Rises
        10. Ice Age: Continental Drift

        Blu-ray Share:

For the new releases, End of Watch recorded a BD sales share of 49.16%, meaning that nearly half of all disc sales for this title were on Blu-ray or a combo package (the other slightly more than half being sales of the DVD only package).

Death Race 3: Inferno's BD sales share was 32.22%, the The Paperboy had 27%, The Men Who Built America had 22% and Universal Soldier: Day of Reckoning had 11%.

None of these new releases were available in Blu-ray 3D.

An all red week this week, as everything was down compared to a year ago, when the popular Real Steel was released on Blu-ray, as well as the Blu-ray/combo exclusive release of Paranormal Activities 3.

Blu-ray sales decreased by $7.76m (down 23.2%), while DVD sales decreased by $17.98m (down 18.6%) producing an overall loss of $25.74 million in combined revenue.

Blu-ray's market share declined, from 25.71% to 24.61%.

          Stats:

For the week ending 2nd February 2013, here are the stats:

          Percentage of revenue:
          Blu-ray vs DVD: 28.15% vs 71.85%

Blu-ray sales total spending: $34.91 million
DVD sales total spending: $89.11 million

          These stats available from here:

          Home Media Magazine

          Top 10:

A week with some more interesting releases allowed Blu-ray and DVD revenue to both rise, and allowed Blu-ray market share to rise as well.

Hotel Transylvania was the title largely responsible. It easily trounced the other offerings on Blu-ray for the week, the distant second place belonging to another new release, Batman: The Dark Knight Returns - Part 2.

Paranormal Activity 4 got 4th place, while Seven Psychopaths was closely behind in 5th.

Downton Abbey: Season 3 rounded off the new releases in the top 10, at 6th.

Also new to the week, but coming just shy of the top 10, at 11th, was The Cold Light of Day.

The complete top 10 chart is below (new releases in bold, and Blu-ray exclusives are denoted by *):
          1. Hotel Transylvania
          2. Batman: The Dark Knight Returns - Part 2
          3. Taken 2
          4. Paranormal Activity 4
          5. Seven Psychopaths
          6. Downton Abbey: Season 3
          7. The Godfather Collection: The Coppola Restoration
          8. End of Watch
          9. Pitch Perfect
          10. Looper

          Blu-ray Share:

Hotel Transylvania managed to grab a BD/3D/combo sales share of 43.59% (meaning 56.41% of all discs sold for the animated movie was in a DVD-only package). It was available on 3D, but with only a 3D sales share of 4.81%.

Batman: The Dark Knight Returns - Part 2 did very well on Blu-ray, garnering a sales share of 71.01%. Seven Psychopaths was the next best, at 45.37%, followed by Paranormal Activity 4 with 35.81%.

Downton Abbey: Season 3 had 22% while The Cold Light of Day only had 19%.

          DVD: $111.25 million
Hotel Transylvania couldn't beat this week last year's Drive, and so both DVD and Blu-ray revenue were down for the week.

Blu-ray sales decreased by a negligible $0.28m (down 0.8%), while DVD sales decreased by a more substantial $22.14m (down 19.9%) producing an overall loss of $22.42 million in combined revenue.

Blu-ray's market share grew, from 24.03% to 28.15%.

            Stats:

For the week ending 9th February 2013, here are the stats:

            Percentage of revenue:
            Blu-ray vs DVD: 27.54% vs 72.46%

Blu-ray sales total spending: $39.48 million
DVD sales total spending: $103.88 million

            These stats available from here:

            Home Media Magazine

            Top 10:

A Disney classic Blu-ray exclusive, and a couple of other new releases, helped to push both DVD and Blu-ray revenue up from recent weeks, although Blu-ray market share dropped slightly due to higher than expected DVD revenue.

The most popular title on Blu-ray was indeed Disney's Peter Pan, available typically as a Blu-ray combo only release. This helped to push it to the top of the Blu-ray charts, even though it only ranked 2nd place in the combined Blu-ray and DVD charts.

Top of this combined chart was Flight, which was second on the Blu-ray only charts.

In 4th place was Here Comes the Boom, ranking just above Alex Cross.

Two more new releases made the combined chart, but not the Blu-ray top 10. Tyler Perry's Madea Gets a Job got as high as 4th on the combined chart, but only 19th on the Blu-ray chart due to hilariously poor sales on Blu-ray (more on that later). And 'Monster High Double Feature: Friday Night Frights/Why Do Ghouls Fall in Love?', also new, wasn't even available on Blu-ray.

So it really was the duo of Peter Pan and Flight (an appropriate combo, given their names) helped push revenue up for the week.

The complete top 10 chart is below (new releases in bold, and Blu-ray exclusives are denoted by *):
            1. *Peter Pan
            2. Flight
            3. Hotel Transylvania
            4. Here Comes the Boom
            5. Alex Cross
            6. Taken 2
            7. End of Watch
            8. Batman: The Dark Knight Returns - Part 2
            9. Pitch Perfect
            10. Paranormal Activity 4

            Blu-ray Share:

Apart from the Blu-ray exclusive Peter Pan, which would obviously have a 100% BD sales share, Flight was the best of the new releases in terms of sales share, garnering a share of 38.39%.

Next up was Here Comes the Boom, at 31.55%. Alex Cross did less well at 22%, and Tyler Perry's other movie, Tyler Perry's Madea Gets a Job, managed to grab a hilarious 3% BD sales share - numbers I have not seen since the launch of the format.

None of the new releases were available as a 3D title.

Almost an "all red" week, but the rise in Blu-ray market share compared to the same week a year ago helped to prevent it. This time last year, there was also a solid Disney classic on Blu-ray exclusive in The Lady and the Tramp, but it was the release of The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 1 (easily a bigger movie than Flight) that did more to help revenue be so much more than this week.

Blu-ray sales decreased by $14.98m (down 27.5%), while DVD sales decreased by $47.77m (down 31.5%) producing an overall loss of $62.75 million in combined revenue.

Blu-ray's market share grew, from 26.42% to 27.54%.

              Stats:

For the week ending 16th February 2013, here are the stats:

              Percentage of revenue:

Blu-ray sales total spending: $64.27 million

              Top 10:

Blu-ray revenue and market share reached the highest point in 2013, and it was all down to one new release: Skyfall.

Skyfall completed dominated the Blu-ray sales charts, beating sales of the second placed Peter Pan by more than a 8:1 ratio.

There was still room for a couple of other new releases too. The Perks of Being a Wallflower managed as high as 3rd on the combined Blu-ray and DVD charts, but ranked well below The Man With the Iron Fists on the Blu-ray only charts - The Man With the Iron Fists was 4th, The Perks of Being a Wallflower was 7th.

In fact, the relatively poor performance of 'Wallflower' allowed another title to rank above it on the Blu-ray charts, a title that only came 12th on the combined Blu-ray and DVD charts - Silent Hill: Revelation was 6th.

But really, it was all about Skyfall.

The complete top 10 chart is below (new releases in bold, and Blu-ray exclusives are denoted by *):
              1. Skyfall
              2. *Peter Pan
              3. Hotel Transylvania
              4. The Man With the Iron Fists
              5. Flight
              6. Silent Hill: Revelation
              7. The Perks of Being a Wallflower
              8. Taken 2
              9. The Dark Knight Rises
              10. Here Comes the Boom

              Blu-ray Share:

Skyfall was not only on top of the sales charts, it was also on top of the BD sales share chart, with 62.53% of all sales belonging to the Blu-ray/combo edition of the film.

The Man With the Iron Fists was the next best new release with 48.01%, while Silent Hill: Revelation followed with 45.77% (with 4.83% belonging to the 3D Blu-ray edition).

Only The Perks of Being a Wallflower failed to make the BD sales share top 20, having only gotten a 21% BD sales share. Movie buyers still remain very picky when it comes to what they do and don't buy on Blu-ray.

Blu-ray's market share grew significantly, from 22.52% to 32.79%, thanks to the difference in BD popularity between this year's number one title (Skyfall) and last year's (Twilight: Breaking Dawn Pt 1).

                Stats:

For the week ending 23rd February 2013, here are the stats:

                Percentage of revenue:
                Blu-ray vs DVD: 33.35% vs 66.65%

Blu-ray sales total spending: $52.77 million
DVD sales total spending: $105.48 million

                These stats available from here:

                Home Media Magazine

                Top 10:

Despite the release of this year's Oscar Best Picture winner (although still an unknown fact at the end of this particular reporting period), and two Blu-ray exclusives, both DVD and Blu-ray revenue dropped compared to the highs of last week. But DVD revenue dropped faster than Blu-ray, and so Blu-ray market share was actually up slightly, to a 2013 high.

Argo was the week's best seller on Blu-ray and DVD combined, but on Blu-ray only, Skyfall maintained its grip, however tenuous, on the number one spot.

And the title that came close (and I mean close) to toppling Skyfall wasn't actually Argo, but it was Game of Thrones: The Complete Second Season, placing Argo in 3rd place.

Monsters, Inc. - Collector's Edition was one of the Blu-ray exclusive previously mentioned. The other was the 3D Blu-ray edition of Top Gun, landing in at 9th.

There were still four more new releases for the week on the Blu-ray and DVD combined top 20.

Sinister was 6th on the Blu-ray only charts, while Battlestar Galactica: Blood & Chrome squeezed in at 10th.

The ones that didn't make the Blu-ray top 10 were Anna Karenina in 11th, and The Package, which didn't rank in the Blu-ray top 20.

So a lot of new releases, several Blu-ray exclusives, but the effects of Skyfall is still being felt this week.

The complete top 10 chart is below (new releases in bold, and Blu-ray exclusives are denoted by *):
                1. Skyfall
                2. Game of Thrones: The Complete Second Season
                3. Argo
                4. *Monsters, Inc. - Collector's Edition
                5. *Peter Pan
                6. Sinister
                7. Hotel Transylvania
                8. Flight
                9. *Top Gun
                10. Battlestar Galactica: Blood & Chrome

                Blu-ray Share:

Top Gun technically was not a Blu-ray exclusive, as its the Blu-ray version of the film "only" sold 94.80% - but as there was no equivalent DVD or even non Blu-ray 3D edition of the film being released during the week, it counts as an exclusive in my books. The two Blu-ray exclusives, Monsters, Inc and Top Gun, apart, the best performing titles in terms of Blu-ray disc sales share was Game of Thrones Season two, with the Blu-ray edition being 61.35% of all disc based sales.

Battlestar Galactica: Blood and Chrome was the next best, at 60.99%.

Argo scored a respectable, but probably still low (for a new release) of 42.53%, explaining why it was 3rd place in the Blu-ray top 20 charts, and not first (or second).

Anna Karenina managed 34.08%, while Sinister had 27%, and The Package only managed 13%.

Top Gun was a Blu-ray 3D exclusive, and BD3D sales share was also at 94.80%. Monsters, Inc was also released for the first time on Blu-ray 3D, and it scored a high 30.70%.

Nice movies on the top ten list. It's no wonder that DVDs as well Blu Rays' profit decrease because most people nowadays are into digital formats.

For the week ending 2nd March 2013, here are the stats:

                    Percentage of revenue:
                    Blu-ray vs DVD: 27.20% vs 72.80%

Blu-ray sales total spending: $48.23 million
DVD sales total spending: $129.10 million

                    Top 10:

Blu-ray revenue dropped compared to last week, but DVD revenue was up, and this managed to reduce the Blu-ray market share for the week ending 2nd March 2013.

And the title largely responsible for this was The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 2, the Twilight series of movies have always been more popular on DVD than your regular Hollywood A-lister.

The final Twilight movie easily dominated the Blu-ray top 10, and even second place was taken by the twin-pack featuring both Part 1 and Part 2, an exclusive for Walmart.

Despite there being several other new releases in the combined Blu-ray and DVD top 20, only one made the Blu-ray top 10. The Master, which came in at 10th.

Other titles that didn't make the Blu-ray top 10 includes Barbie in The Pink Shoes, 5th on the combined list, but only 11th on the Blu-ray only list; Chasing Mavericks (13th on the combined, and 16th on the Blu-ray only list), and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Rise of the Turtles, which was a DVD exclusive.

The complete top 10 chart is below (new releases in bold, and Blu-ray exclusives are denoted by *):
                    1. The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 2
                    2. The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 1 and 2
                    3. Skyfall
                    4. Argo
                    5. Game of Thrones: The Complete Second Season
                    6. *Monsters, Inc. - Collector's Edition
                    7. *Peter Pan
                    8. Hotel Transylvania
                    9. Flight
                    10. The Master

                    Blu-ray Share:

Out of all the new releases, The Master actually did the best in terms of BD sales share, with 41.96% of all disc based sales belonging to the Blu-ray/combo SKUs.

The Walmart exclusive Breaking Dawn Part 1 and 2 package was next best, at 30.22%.

Chasing Mavericks had 28.50%, while the week's best seller, Breaking Dawn Part 2, had only 24% (hence explaining the drop in overall Blu-ray market share mentioned above).

Barbie in The Pink Shoes only managed 10%.

None of the new releases this week were available on Blu-ray 3D.

                      Blu-ray vs DVD: 31.44% vs 68.56%

Blu-ray sales total spending: $61.33 million

                      Top 10:

Both DVD and Blu-ray revenue were up, with Blu-ray revenue rising faster, for the week ending 9th March 2013. The best selling Blu-ray title for the week was Wreck-It Ralph, which easily outsold last week's number one, The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 2.

There were quite a few new releases, but none matched the caliber of Wreck-It-Ralph.

Red Dawn (2012) came closest, in third place (and selling nearly five times less).

A couple of new releases didn't make the Blu-ray top 10 either. The Marine 3: Homefront came 15th, while Playing for Keeps was 19th.

Two more releases, Duck Dynasty: Season Two Vol. One and Sofia the First: Once Upon a Princess, were DVD only releases.

In the top 10, at 10th, was the first time on Blu-ray release of the Spielberg masterpiece Schindler's List.

The complete top 10 chart is below (new releases in bold, and Blu-ray exclusives are denoted by *):
                      1. Wreck-It Ralph
                      2. The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 2

                      4. Skyfall
                      5. Argo
                      6. The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 1 and 2
                      7. *Monsters, Inc. - Collector's Edition
                      8. *Peter Pan
                      9. Hotel Transylvania
                      10. Schindler's List

                      Blu-ray Share:

As expected, Schindler's List topped the BD sales share chart, with 83.46% of all disc sales belonging to the Blu-ray or combo versions.

Wreck-It-Ralph was actually the second best in terms of BD sales share, with a BD sales share of 51.14%, meaning the BD/combo versions outsold the DVD only editions. It was also the only new release available on Blu-ray 3D, with a respectable 10.61% BD3D sales share (so 1 in 5 Blu-ray/combo purchase was for the 3D edition).

Red Dawn (2012) had 44.16%, while The Marine 3: Homefront and Playing for Keeps had 22% and 21% respectively.

                        Top 10:

Both DVD and Blu-ray revenue shrank compared to the highs of last week, but DVD dropped slightly faster, allowing for a slight increase in Blu-ray market share for the week ending 16th March 2013.

Rise of the Guardians was the week's top selling new release, beating Oscar darling Life of Pi on both Blu-ray and DVD, despite the situation being reverse when it comes to box office.

The Mulan / Mulan II doublepack led the three catalog releases that managed to get into the Blu-ray top 10 this week. The Mulan 2-movie pack was 7th, while Willow followed closely at 8th. Who Framed Roger Rabbit was 10th, both of the latter two were Blu-ray/combo exclusives.

There were three lother new release that did not make the Blu-ray top 10. Cirque du Soleil: Worlds Away narrowly missed out in 11th, while The Hunchback of Notre Dame 2-Movie Collection was 15th and Bachelorette was 16th.

The complete top 10 chart is below (new releases in bold, and Blu-ray exclusives are denoted by *):

                        9. Argo
                        10. * Who Framed Roger Rabbit

                        Blu-ray Share:

The Mulan movie pack led the BD sales share charts, with 70.61% of all disc versions of this movie being sold on Blu-ray/combo.

Despite not making the top 10, Cirque du Soleil: Worlds Away was second on the BD sales share charts, with 56.03%.

Continuing down the list, Life of Pi with 46.79% was next best of the new releases, just managing to beat Rise of the Guardians at 43.99%.

There were quite a few Blu-ray 3D releases too. Worlds Away was the best of the bunch, with 20.39% of all disc sales belonging to the 3D package. 13.45% of Life of Pi disc sales were for the 3D combo package, while Rise of the Guardians only had 5.57% of disc sales in 3D.

                          Stats:

For the week ending 23rd March 2013, here are the stats:

                          Percentage of revenue:
                          Blu-ray vs DVD: 38.50% vs 61.50%

Blu-ray sales total spending: $78.63 million
DVD sales total spending: $125.59 million

                          These stats available from here:

                          Home Media Magazine

                          Top 10:

Both Blu-ray weekly revenue and market share was at a 2013 high, thanks to a mega-hit, a A-lister, and another release that's not too far behind. And all of these top 3 releases broke through the 50% BD sales share barrier, meaning all sold more with the Blu-ray (and combo) editions than the DVD-only editions.

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey was, as expected, the top selling new release for the week, outselling the second placed Les Misérables by more than a 3 to 1 margin.

And in third place, we have Zero Dark Thirty.

These top 3 releases combined has a box office total of nearly $550 million, and so it isn't surprising that Blu-ray market share and revenue were all at 2013 highs.

There were two other new releases in the combined Blu-ray and DVD top 20. This Is 40 debuts at 7th, while Return to Nim's Island, a Walmart exclusive, didn't rank high enough to get into the Blu-ray top 20 (it was 19th on the combined Blu-ray and DVD charts).

The complete top 10 chart is below (new releases in bold, and Blu-ray exclusives are denoted by *):
                          1. The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey
                          2. Les Misérables
                          3. Zero Dark Thirty
                          4. Life of Pi
                          5. Rise of the Guardians
                          6. Wreck-It Ralph

                          10. Skyfall

                          Blu-ray Share:

As mentioned earlier, The Hobbit, Les Misérables and Zero Dark Thirty were all more popular on Blu-ray and combo formats than on DVD, with BD sales shares of 55.72%, 53.92% and 52.95% respectively. This all combined to help push overall weekly Blu-ray market share to a 2013 high of 38%.

This is 40 was on the other side of 50%, with 45.69%. Return to Nim's Island managed 23%.

Only The Hobbit was released on Blu-ray 3D, and 9.53% of all disc sales belonged to the 3D edition.

An all green week this week, as The Hobbit beats The Muppets from this week last year, Les Mis beats The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo and Zero Dark Thirty easily takes out Hop.

Blu-ray sales increased by an impressive $37.85m (up 92.8%), while DVD sales increased by $16m (up 14.6%) producing an overall gain of $53.85 million in combined revenue.

                            Stats:

For the week ending 30th March 2013, here are the stats:

                            Percentage of revenue:
                            Blu-ray vs DVD: 30.94% vs 69.06%

Blu-ray sales total spending: $68.89 million
DVD sales total spending: $153.75 million

                            Top 10:

The annual Easter bump sees DVD revenue go up significantly compared to last week, although Blu-ray revenue dropped slightly thanks to the waning effects of the three hits from last week. This wasn't enough to drop Blu-ray market share out of the 30% range though.

That isn't to say that there wasn't a hit this week, and Lincoln performed just as you would expect, easily going to the top of the Blu-ray and DVD charts.

It wasn't the only new release of the week, but it was clearly the biggest. Parental Guidance was the next best new release at 6th, while you have to go all the way to the end of the top 10 to find the next new release, Killing Them Softly.

Two more new releases made the combined Blu-ray and DVD top 20, but not the Blu-ray top 10. The Collection was 18th on the combined chart, and 17th on the Blu-ray only chart. A Turtle's Tale 2: Sammy's Escape From Paradise was at 20th on the combined chart, but it wasn't available on Blu-ray.

The complete top 10 chart is below (new releases in bold, and Blu-ray exclusives are denoted by *):
                            1. Lincoln
                            2. Les Misérables
                            3. The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey
                            4. Wreck-It Ralph
                            5. Rise of the Guardians
                            6. Parental Guidance
                            7. Life of Pi
                            8. Zero Dark Thirty
                            9. This Is 40
                            10. Killing Them Softly

                            Blu-ray Share:

Lincoln debuts on Blu-ray with a respectable, but not spectacular 41.10% BD sales share, meaning 41.10% of all disc sales were for the Blu-ray (or combo) editions. An A-list release like this would normally get above 50%, much like all three big hitters from last week, but the genre/topic of the movie probably contributed to its lower BD sales share.

It was still the best performing new release in terms of BD sales share for the week though, with Killing Them Softly managing 34.62%, The Collection at 29.91% and Parental Guidance at 27.00%.

None of the new releases were available on 3D.

                            DVD: $121.64 million
Another all green week, but this one cheats a little by comparing this year's Easter bump with just a normal week last year (2012's Easter was later than this year's). Which is why next week's comparison will be biased towards last year, we it would be last year's Easter bump going up against this year's post-Easter lull.

Blu-ray sales increased by another impressive $33.58m (up 95.1%), while DVD sales increased by an equally impressive $32.11m (up 26.4%) producing an overall gain of $65.69 million in combined revenue.

Blu-ray's market share grew, from 22.50% to 30.94%.

                              Stats:

For the week ending 6th April 2013, here are the stats:

                              Percentage of revenue:
                              Blu-ray vs DVD: 28.47% vs 71.53%

Blu-ray sales total spending: $36.59 million
DVD sales total spending: $91.93 million

                              Top 10:

The annual post-Easter lull arrives this week, and it seems most studios didn't even bother putting out a new release. But there was a "topical" release, and as such, it managed to grab top spot without too much difficulty (at least for the DVD edition. The Bible: The Epic Miniseries was the best selling new release, and the only new release in the top 10, for the week.

Other than this, there's nothing much of note happening this week. Blu-ray revenue and market share were both down compared to recent weeks, which isn't a surprise, and the usual suspects from recent top 10's were all there too.

The complete top 10 chart is below (new releases in bold, and Blu-ray exclusives are denoted by *):
                              1. The Bible: The Epic Miniseries
                              2. Lincoln
                              3. The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey
                              4. Les Misérables
                              5. Life of Pi
                              6. Wreck-It Ralph
                              7. Rise of the Guardians
                              8. Zero Dark Thirty
                              9. Parental Guidance
                              10. This Is 40

                              Blu-ray Share:

The Bible: The Epic Miniseries managed to grab the 20th spot on the BD sales share charts, with a BD sales percentage of 26.95%, nearly 3 in 4 copies of the miniseries were selling on DVD instead of on Blu-ray. As expected, it wasn't available on Blu-ray 3D.

                              Blu-ray: $45.74 million
                              DVD: $157.96 million
A bit of an unfair comparison, as noted last week, where we compared this year's post-Easter lull with last year's Easter bump.

As such, Blu-ray sales decreased by $9.15m (down 20%), while DVD sales decreased by $66.03m (down 41.8%) producing an overall loss of $75.18 million in combined revenue.

Blu-ray's market share did grow, from 22.45% to 28.47%.

But a better comparison would be this year's Easter bump with last year's. This year, Blu-ray did $68.89 million worth of business during the Easter and pre-Easter week, with DVD sales totaling $153.75 million. Compared to $45.74m for Blu-ray and $157.96m for DVD last year. That's a nearly 51% revenue rise for Blu-ray, but a 2.7% drop for DVD - overall revenue was up, and so was Blu-ray market share, from 22.45% to 30.94%.

I think this gives a pretty good picture of where Blu-ray and DVD sales are right now compared to a year ago!

                                Top 10:

The post-Easter lull continues this week, with only one new release making the Blu-ray top 10, and even then, it was at 9th place. The Sorcerer and the White Snake was that title.

In the combined DVD and Blu-ray top 20, there were two other new releases. The Baytown Outlaws came in 14th on the combined list, but only 20th on the Blu-ray only list. Gabriel Iglesias: Aloha Fluffy was 16th on the combined list, but failed to make the Blu-ray top 20.

                                So another slow week.

The other new releases didn't do nearly as well. The Baytown Outlaws managed 21%, and Gabriel Iglesias: Aloha Fluffy got only 16%.
