    Stats:

For the week ending 10th March 2012, here are the stats:

    Percentage of revenue:
    Blu-ray vs DVD: 25.51% vs 74.49%

Blu-ray sales total spending: $42.16 million
DVD sales total spending: $123.11 million

    These stats available from here:

    Home Media Magazine

    Top 10:

A spate of new releases and re-releases this week, although none of them considered A-list, helped to push both Blu-ray and DVD revenue up compared to the last week.

Immortals was the best selling Blu-ray title of the week, easily topping the second placed Game of Thrones: The Complete First Season, one of the most anticipated TV on Blu-ray releases of the year.

There were four more new releases in the Blu-ray top 10, including the Footloose remake at 3rd, the awful Jack and Jill at 5th, and the newly individually packaged The Lion King II: Simba's Pride and The Lion King 1 1/2 at 7th and 10th respectively.

And there were still two more new releases didn't make the top 10 though, including Barbie in A Mermaid Tale 2 (DVD-only), and Tooth Fairy 2.

So it's not so much quality, as quantity, and that can help too, as Blu-ray market share also rose.

The complete top 10 chart is below (new releases in bold, and Blu-ray exclusives are denoted by *):
    1. Immortals
    2. Game of Thrones: The Complete First Season
    3. Footloose
    4. Hugo
    5. Jack and Jill
    6. Puss in Boots
    7. The Lion King II: Simba's Pride
    8. *Lady and the Tramp
    9. The Godfather Collection: The Coppola Restoration
    10. The Lion King 1 1/2

    Blu-ray Share:

The top two selling new releases, Immortals and Game of Thrones, both did quite well on Blu-ray, recording 58.82% and 56.73% of all disc based sales on the HD format respectively.

The next two did much worse, with Footloose at 29% and Jack and Jill at 28%.

    For the two Lion King re-releases, '1 1/2' managed 44.62% and '2' got 40.12%.

Of the week's new releases, only Immortals was available in 3D, and the 3D Blu-ray version was 18% of all disc sales, or roughly 1 in every 3 Blu-ray copies sold. Not bad, but maybe expected as the 3D Blu-ray version was being sold at the exact same price (at Amazon) during most of the week these stats covered.

Both Blu-ray and DVD sales rose compared to the same time last year, and as per usual, Blu-ray sales rose by a greater amount than DVD sales.

Blu-ray sales increased by $11.09m (up 35.7%), while DVD sales also increased, but only by $3.24m (up 2.7%) producing an overall gain of $14.33 million in combined revenue.

Blu-ray's market share rose as a result, from 20.58% to 25.51% (a rise of 23.96%).

      Stats:

For the week ending 17th March 2012, here are the stats:

      Percentage of revenue:
      Blu-ray vs DVD: 23.45% vs 76.55%

Blu-ray sales total spending: $34.34 million
DVD sales total spending: $112.13 million

      These stats available from here:

      Top 10:

A good sprinkling of new releases could not stop Blu-ray revenue and market share from dropping compared to the last week, with none of the new releases managing to get over $100m at the box office, it's no surprise.

The Adventures of Tintin was the week's top seller on Blu-ray, although on DVD, the spot was taken by Happy Feet Two instead (Happy Feet Two dropped to third on the Blu-ray only charts).

The Descendants was a better seller on Blu-ray than Happy Feet Two, despite selling less discs (both Blu-ray and DVD) overall.

The latest film interpretation of The Three Musketeers came in at 5th, with My Week With Marilyn debuting in 8th place.

On the combined Blu-ray and DVD charts, Young Adult managed a top 20 finish, at 15th, which translated to a 16th placed finish on the Blu-ray only charts.

The below average Blu-ray performance of this week's overall top seller, Happy Feet Two, is what's largely responsible for the dip in Blu-ray market share.

The complete top 10 chart is below (new releases in bold, and Blu-ray exclusives are denoted by *):
      1. The Adventures of Tintin
      2. The Descendants
      3. Happy Feet Two
      4. Immortals
      5. The Three Musketeers
      6. Game of Thrones: The Complete First Season
      7. Hugo
      8. My Week With Marilyn
      9. Puss in Boots
      10. The Godfather Collection: The Coppola Restoration

      Blu-ray Share:

Of all the new releases, surprisingly perhaps, The Three Musketeers actually had the best numbers when it came to Blu-ray sales share, with 52.59% of all disc sales belonging to the Blu-ray format (the rest for DVD, obviously).

The Adventures of Tintin wasn't too far behind though, and just a whisker shy of the magic 50% mark - it came in at 49.92%.

The Descendants managed 32.12%, which is respectable for a drama. The same can be said of My Week with Marilyn, at 29.13%.

So the only real disappointment, and I use that term relatively, was Happy Feet Two at 23%.

Both Tintin and The Three Musketeers were available in 3D as well, with sales share of 16% and 19% respectively (meaning that, for example with Tintin, the Blu-ray 3D combo version was responsible for 16% of all disc sales). A bit more than 1 in 3 Blu-ray copies being the 3D version isn't too bad for either movie, and the $6 difference between the 2D and 3D versions of Tintin (on Amazon at least) would have made people think about their choice, and quite a few did choose 3D, it seems.

With this week having more releases, if not better ones, than the same week last year, overall revenue rose, with DVD sales steady, and Blu-ray sales increasing.

Blu-ray sales increased by $7.97m (up 30.2%), while DVD sales decreased ever so slightly by $1.59m (down 1.4%) producing an overall gain of $6.38 million in combined revenue.

Blu-ray's market share rose as a result, from 18.82% to 23.45% (a rise of 24.6%).

        Stats:

For the week ending 24th March 2012, here are the stats:

        Percentage of revenue:
        Blu-ray vs DVD: 27.17% vs 72.83%

Blu-ray sales total spending: $40.36 million
DVD sales total spending: $108.20 million

        These stats available from here:

        Top 10:

Finally, we have some new releases that, at the very least, broke through the $100m mark at the box office. Not one, but two, even.

So it was strange that these two blockbusters were not the week's best selling title on DVD or Blu-ray - that honor went to The Muppets instead.

Very closely behind though was the recent remake of The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, one of the two $100m+ releases.

The other was Hop, but on Blu-ray, it only managed to half the business of The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo.

With the top 3 being all new releases, the 4th place was also another new release - Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy. And finally, in 6th place, was The Sitter.

With stellar performances on Blu-ray for 3 of the 5 new releases, and "above average" for the other two, Blu-ray market share rose to its highest level recorded for 2012 so far.

The complete top 10 chart is below (new releases in bold, and Blu-ray exclusives are denoted by *):
        1. The Muppets
        2. The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo
        3. Hop
        4. Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy
        5. The Adventures of Tintin
        6. The Sitter
        7. Puss in Boots
        8. Immortals
        9. Happy Feet Two
        10. The Descendants

        Blu-ray Share:

As mentioned earlier, all of the week's new releases performed admirably on Blu-ray. But the best of the bunch was The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, with 54.57% of all discs sold belonging to the Blu-ray format (45.43% to DVD, in other words).

Two other titles also broke through the 50% barrier (meaning the Blu-ray and combo versions outsold the DVD-only versions), The Muppets at 52.49% and Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy at 50.42%.

The other two new releases didn't do too badly considering their genre (comedy). The Sitter managed 38.19% while Hop was just behind at 36.41%.

None of the new releases this week were available on 3D.

          Stats:

For the week ending 31st March 2012, here are the stats:

          Percentage of revenue:
          Blu-ray vs DVD: 22.52% vs 77.48%

Blu-ray sales total spending: $34.98 million
DVD sales total spending: $120.32 million

          These stats available from here:

          Home Media Magazine

          Top 10:

Only two new releases this week, and neither did extremely well on Blu-ray, resulting in a rise in DVD revenue, but a fall in Blu-ray revenue, compared to a week ago.

Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked was the week's best selling title, while Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close was the only other "new" release, way back in 5th place on the Blu-ray charts.

There was also the re-release of The Bodyguard for the first time on Blu-ray, and it managed to get an 8th place finish in the sales charts.

So while the latest Chipmunks movie did manage to get over $100m at the box office, enough to make it a significant release if not exactly an A-lister, it was still a relatively quiet week for Blu-ray.

The complete top 10 chart is below (new releases in bold, and Blu-ray exclusives are denoted by *):
          1. Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked
          2. Hop
          3. The Muppets
          4. The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo
          5. Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close
          6. The Adventures of Tintin
          7. Puss in Boots
          8. The Bodyguard
          9. Immortals
          10. Game of Thrones: The Complete First Season

          Blu-ray Share:

The main reason for the drop in Blu-ray market share for this week, compared to last week, is all down to the new releases, even the semi Blu-ray exclusive re-release of The Bodyguard.

For 'Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked', its 23% Blu-ray sales share meant that 77% of all disc sales for this title was on DVD, and this was below average for a new release.

Not that 'Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close' did much better, with a 27% Blu-ray share.

Even 'The Bodyguard', a Blu-ray catalog release that normally would get closer to 100% Blu-ray share, didn't do that well, with only 43.63% choosing to buy the movie on Blu-ray for the first time. This suggest that nearly 57% thought the DVD version was good enough, even though the DVD version hasn't been updated since 2005. Had it not been for the untimely death of Whitney Houston back in February, this title might not even have made the top 10, as it's not one of those catalog titles Blu-ray fans had been waiting for.

None of the new releases this week were available on 3D.

          DVD: $145.67 million
This week last year, the release of Tangled, Black Swan and the more popular catalog release of The Ten Commandments (71% Blu-ray share, compared to 44% for The Bodyguard this week) all helped Blu-ray and DVD revenue reach a high point for 2011 at that time. The releases this week aren't of the same calibre, nor in the same quantity, and so, both Blu-ray and DVD revenue fell.

Blu-ray sales decreased by $13.33m (down 27.6%), while DVD sales decreased by $25.35m (down 17.4%) producing an overall loss of $38.68 million in combined revenue.

Blu-ray's market share fell as a result, from 24.9% to 22.52% (a rise of 9.56%).

            Stats:

For the week ending 7th April 2012, here are the stats:

            Percentage of revenue:
            Blu-ray vs DVD: 22.6% vs 77.4%

Blu-ray sales total spending: $45.62 million
DVD sales total spending: $156.28 million

            These stats available from here:

            Home Media Magazine

            Top 10:

Another fairly quiet week in terms of new releases, but revenue for both DVD and Blu-ray are up thanks to the usual Easter bump (to be followed by the usual post-Easter lull, next week).

The appropriately (or maybe inappropriately) themed Hop was the week's top seller on DVD, but the top seller on Blu-ray, by the tiniest of margins, was a new release, War Horse.

We Bought a Zoo was the week's only notable new release, coming in at 4th on the Blu-ray charts.

The rest of the top 10 chart was occupied by recent releases. The Blu-ray market share remained almost unchanged from last week.

The complete top 10 chart is below (new releases in bold, and Blu-ray exclusives are denoted by *):
            1. War Horse
            2. Hop
            3. The Muppets
            4. We Bought a Zoo
            5. Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked
            6. The Adventures of Tintin
            7. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 2
            8. Puss in Boots
            9. Lady and the Tramp
            10. The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo

            Blu-ray Share:

A quite average set of Blu-ray share figures for everything in the top 10 meant that Blu-ray market share remained at the relatively low level it was last week.

Of the new releases, War Horse did better on Blu-ray, with 36.08% of all disc based sales belonging to the HD format (63.92% on DVD, in other words). We Bought a Zoo only managed 26.55%, quite poor for first week sales.

None of the new releases this week were available on 3D.

The stats for the week ending 9th April 2011 are as follows. Some small adjustments to the data posted last year (based on more recent updates) has been made and is shown below.

            DVD: $130.23 million
A surprising result for this year-on-year comparison, as we have a very rare DVD revenue increase coupled with the even more rare Blu-ray revenue decrease, when comparing the same week from a year ago.

This is easily explained though - the Easter sales bump this year, compared to Easter happening at a different time last year. The comparison also wasn't helped by the release of Tron: Legacy last year this time, a much more A-list title compared to War Horse.

Blu-ray sales decreased by $1.41m (down 3%), while DVD sales increased by $26.05m (up 20%) producing an overall gain of $24.64 million in combined revenue.

Blu-ray's market share fell as a result, from 26.53% to 22.6% (a fall of 14.81%).

              Stats:

For the week ending 14th April 2012, here are the stats:

              Percentage of revenue:
              Blu-ray vs DVD: 20.55% vs 79.45%

Blu-ray sales total spending: $22.15 million

              These stats available from here:

              Home Media Magazine

              Top 10:

The post Easter slump is here, with Blu-ray stumbling a bit more than DVD, and so the overall Blu-ray market share slumps to a 12 week low.

Only three new releases for this week, one of them wasn't even available on Blu-ray, and none managed to outsell last week's number one, War Horse, when all disc sales were combined. On Blu-ray though, The Darkest Hour was the best selling title, despite the horrible Photoshop job of a cover art.

The Iron Lady actually also sold more on DVD than The Darkest Hour, but sold less on Blu-ray, coming in at third place only, behind War Horse.

The complete 9th season of One Tree Hill was also released, but it did not come in a Blu-ray edition.

The rest of the top 10 chart was occupied by recent releases. The Blu-ray market share remained almost unchanged from last week.

The complete top 10 chart is below (new releases in bold, and Blu-ray exclusives are denoted by *):
              1. The Darkest Hour
              2. War Horse
              3. The Iron Lady
              4. The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo
              5. We Bought a Zoo
              6. Hop
              7. Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked
              8. The Muppets
              9. Ocean's Trilogy
              10. Game of Thrones: The Complete First Season

              Blu-ray Share:

The Darkest Hour managed to get over the 50% Blu-ray sales share figure, 53.65% to be exact, meaning more copies of the film were sold on Blu-ray than on DVD.

The Iron Lady didn't do as well, with only 29% of sales belonging to Blu-ray.

The Darkest Hour was also available on 3D, and 20.67% of all discs sales were for the 3D version - this means nearly half of all people who purchased the Blu-ray version went for the 3D Blu-ray version. The $2 difference between the 3D and 2D versions may have made the decision an easy one for consumers.

              DVD: $136.79 million
Comparing the post Easter slump to any other week is a bit unfair, but considering that last time this year, discs sales were on a high thanks to the release of the (then) latest Harry Potter movie, it's even more unfair.

Blu-ray sales decreased by $28.42m (down 56.2%), while DVD sales decreased by $51.16m (up 37.4%) producing an overall loss of $79.58 million in combined revenue.

Blu-ray's market share fell as a result, from 26.99% to 20.55% (a fall of 23.86%).

A fairer comparison would be with last year's post Easter lull, which happened during the week ending 30th April. And the comparison yields almost identical results to this year's slump, with Blu-ray up slightly, and DVD only down slightly, but combined revenue virtually the same.

                Stats:

For the week ending 21st April 2012, here are the stats:

                Percentage of revenue:
                Blu-ray vs DVD: 26.08% vs 73.92%

Blu-ray sales total spending: $28.68 million
DVD sales total spending: $81.31 million

                These stats available from here:

                Home Media Magazine

                Top 10:

An A-list release finally, and while it was enough to allow Blu-ray to post a rise in revenue compared to last week, overall sales remained slow compared to previous weeks.

Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol completely dominated the sales charts this week, outselling the number two title by more than 13 times on the Blu-ray charts.

And while the hit, which took in more than $200m at the box office, is probably the biggest release on Blu-ray so far in 2012, the lack of other notable new releases (despite a Blu-ray exclusive) this week and a hangover from the post Easter lull, meant that Blu-ray revenue for the week was still the 4th lowest recorded in 2012 so far.

BBC's popular Frozen Planet was one of the other three new releases, coming in at 3rd, while 8th place was occupied by another documentary, Born to Be Wild.

Just above Born to Be Wild was the Blu-ray (combo) exclusive release of Shame, but it didn't even sell enough copies to make the top 20 combined Blu-ray and DVD charts.

The complete top 10 chart is below (new releases in bold, and Blu-ray exclusives are denoted by *):
                1. Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol
                2. War Horse
                3. Frozen Planet
                4. The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo
                5. Mission: Impossible - Ultimate Missions Collection
                6. The Darkest Hour
                7. * Shame
                8. Born to Be Wild
                9. Beauty and the Beast
                10. Captain America: The First Avenger

                Blu-ray Share:

Apart from the Blu-ray exclusive Shame, the most impressive of the new releases was, perhaps as expected, the latest Mission Impossible movie. Ghost Protocol had a Blu-ray share of 67.14%, meaning only 32.86% of all discs sales were on DVD. This is one of the best first week Blu-ray shares ever recorded.

Not that the other two new releases did poorly. Frozen Planet debuted at 49.36%, while Born to Be Wild got 46.88%.

Of the new releases, only Born to Be Wild was available in Blu-ray 3D, with 16.27% of all sales belonging to the Blu-ray 3D combo version.

                Year on Year Comparison

The stats for the week ending 23rd April 2011 are as follows. Some small adjustments to the data posted last year (based on more recent updates) has been made and is shown below.

                DVD: $174.11 million
Another unfair comparison, here, we are comparing the Easter sales bump from last year to a normal week, even if the week featured an A-list release. So don't take this comparison too seriously.

Blu-ray sales decreased by $17.65m (down 38.1%), while DVD sales decreased by $92.8m (down 53.3%) producing a whopping overall loss of $110.45 million in combined revenue.

Blu-ray's market share still rose, from 21.02% to 26.08% (a rise of 24.07%).

A little bit of a milestone this week, as it's exactly 52 weeks since the last edition of our yearly analysis feature, Blu-ray: The State of Play. So in the next week or two, look forward to a brand new analysis, as we look at how Blu-ray has done over the last 12 month.

                  Stats:

For the week ending 28th April 2012, here are the stats:

                  Percentage of revenue:
                  Blu-ray vs DVD: 24.13% vs 75.87%

Blu-ray sales total spending: $25.02 million
DVD sales total spending: $78.66 million

                  These stats available from here:

                  Home Media Magazine

                  Top 10:

A very quiet week in which both Blu-ray and DVD revenue decreased compared to the previous week, although Blu-ray revenue fell a bit more, percentage wise, than DVD.

Contraband was the only notable new release of the week, and it easily managed to top the Blu-ray sales charts, beating last week's number one, Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol.

The combined Blu-ray and DVD charts also showed, in 20th place, another new release - Dark Tide. But it failed to sell enough copies to get onto the Blu-ray top 20 charts.

Exclusively on Blu-ray was the 10th anniversary 2-movie collection of The Princess Diaries, which did well enough to rank 3rd on the Blu-ray charts.

The popularity of the new The Avengers flick (trailer) at the cinemas obvious helped a few related titles, such as Thor (trailer) and Captain America: The First Avenger (trailer), to rise up in the charts (Iron Man 2 was also in the top 20, and even The Incredible Hulk managed 19th place).

But that was pretty much it, and as a result of the lack of new releases, Blu-ray market share fell compared to last week.

The complete top 10 chart is below (new releases in bold, and Blu-ray exclusives are denoted by *):
                  1. Contraband
                  2. Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol
                  3. *The Princess Diaries 2-Movie Collection
                  4. Beauty and the Beast
                  5. Thor
                  6. Captain America: The First Avenger
                  7. War Horse
                  8. The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo
                  9. Frozen Planet
                  10. Forgetting Sarah Marshall

                  Blu-ray Share:

Contraband did quite well on Blu-ray, ensuring 51.87% of all discs sold were for the HD format (48.13% on DVD). It wasn't available on Blu-ray 3D.

                      Stats:

For the week ending 5th May 2012, here are the stats:

                      Percentage of revenue:
                      Blu-ray vs DVD: 21.29% vs 78.71%

Blu-ray sales total spending: $22.90 million
DVD sales total spending: $84.66 million

                      Top 10:

Despite three new releases, none of them were blockbusters, and so Blu-ray revenue and market share both dropped compared to last week.

The Soderbergh flop Haywire was the week's top selling movie, which tells you all you need to know about this week's new releases really.

Joyful Noise was the next best ranked Blu-ray release, coming in at third, while New Year's Eve was in 5th place.

Avengers related flicks continue to dominate the top 10, with Thor, Captain America: The First Avenger, The Incredible Hulk and Iron Man 2, all in the top 10.

So another quiet week as the decline of DVD sales continue, while Blu-ray's growth is temporarily stalled.

The complete top 10 chart is below (new releases in bold, and Blu-ray exclusives are denoted by *):
                      1. Haywire
                      2. Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol
                      3. Joyful Noise
                      4. Contraband
                      5. New Year's Eve
                      6. Thor
                      7. Captain America: The First Avenger
                      8. Beauty and the Beast
                      9. The Incredible Hulk
                      10. Iron Man 2

                      Blu-ray Share:

Haywire was relatively well received on Blu-ray, with 49.13% of all disc sales on Blu-ray, making it one of better Blu-ray releases of recent time.

Both Joyful Noise and New Year's Eve, however, failed to achieve an above average performance (or even an average one), with 23% and 19% respectively.

None of the new releases were available on Blu-ray 3D.

                        These stats available from here:

                        Home Media Magazine

                        Top 10:

A slight improvement compared to the last couple of weeks, in terms of Blu-ray revenue and market share. This is largely thanks to 2 titles, although one of them did much better on Blu-ray than the other.

The top selling title on Blu-ray was Underworld: Awakening, which outsold the number two title, The Vow, by more than a 2 to 1 margin.

It was almost the reverse on DVD though, with The Vow easily outselling Underworld: Awakening. Even after all this time, Blu-ray appears to still dominate certain genres more effectively than others.

There were two other new releases in the combined Blu-ray and DVD top 20, including Chuck: The Complete Fifth and Final Season and Wrestlemania XXVIII, but neither made the Blu-ray top 10 coming in at 11th and 12th respectively.

A return to the top 10 for We Bought a Zoo, and also the Star Wars boxset.

The complete top 10 chart is below (new releases in bold, and Blu-ray exclusives are denoted by *):
                        1. Underworld: Awakening
                        2. The Vow
                        3. Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol
                        4. Thor
                        5. Captain America: The First Avenger
                        6. Contraband
                        7. Haywire
                        8. Iron Man 2
                        9. We Bought a Zoo
                        10. Star Wars: The Complete Saga

                        Blu-ray Share:

Of the new releases, Underworld: Awakening had the best result, with 55.70% of all disc sales belonging to the Blu-ray edition (and 44.3% on DVD). A 3D version was also available, which accounted for 14% of all disc sales (or 1 in 4 Blu-ray edition sales).

The Vow didn't do as well, with only a 24% sales share for Blu-ray.

For the two titles that didn't make the Blu-ray top 10, the final season of Chuck got 37%, while Wrestlemania XXVIII was slightly better at 39.15%.

                          Top 10:

A good sprinkling of new releases, but without one that got over $100m at the box office, both Blu-ray and DVD revenue shrunk compared to the previous week.

The Grey was the best seller of the week, but with only a small lead over the second placed Chronicle.

In 4th place was One for the Money, while Rampart came in at 9th.

There were also a couple that didn't make the Blu-ray top 10, including The Devil Inside and Hell on Wheels: The Complete First Season.

The complete top 10 chart is below (new releases in bold, and Blu-ray exclusives are denoted by *):
                          1. The Grey
                          2. Chronicle
                          3. Underworld: Awakening
                          4. One for the Money
                          5. The Vow
                          6. Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol
                          7. Thor
                          8. Captain America: The First Avenger
                          9. Rampart
                          10. Contraband

                          Blu-ray Share:

Both of the top 2 sellers managed to get over the magic 50% sales share mark for Blu-ray, meaning the Blu-ray versions of these two movies outsold the DVD versions. The Grey managed to get 51.23%, while Chronicle was even better at 57.97%.

Of the other new releases, One for the Money got 23%, Rampart got 36%, The Devil Inside was at 22% and 33% for Hell on Wheels: The Complete First Season.

None of the new releases were available on Blu-ray 3D.

                            Top 10:

Despite the top 4 all being new releases, Blu-ray revenue and market share remain practically unchanged from a week before.

Red Tails was the week's best seller on Blu-ray, easily outselling the second placed This Means War.

Further back in 3rd was The Secret World of Arrietty, while the The Woman in Black was in 4th place.

Two more titles made the combined Blu-ray and DVD sales charts, Sherlock: Season Two at 9th, and Rizzoli & Isles: The Complete Second Season, but only the former was available on Blu-ray and it only came 14th on the Blu-ray sales charts.

Men in Black III's theatrical debut helped both previous MIB titles to get into the Blu-ray top 10, with the second Men in Black movie being available on the HD format for the first time.

The complete top 10 chart is below (new releases in bold, and Blu-ray exclusives are denoted by *):
                            1. Red Tails
                            2. This Means War
                            3. The Secret World of Arrietty
                            4. The Woman in Black
                            5. The Grey
                            6. Chronicle
                            7. Underworld: Awakening
                            8. Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol
                            9. Men in Black II
                            10. Men in Black

                            Blu-ray Share:

Of the week's new on Blu-ray releases, MIB II was the only one that crossed the 50% Blu-ray sales share, with 59.30% discs sold during the week belonging to Blu-ray. But Red Tails did come close with 47.76%.

This Means War has 43.52%, The Secret World of Arrietty has 42.81% and The Woman in Black was further back at 37%.

Sherlock: Season Two managed to get 23%.

Again, none of the new releases were available on Blu-ray 3D.

                              Stats:

For the week ending 2nd June 2012, here are the stats:

                              Percentage of revenue:
                              Blu-ray vs DVD: 23.13% vs 76.87%

Blu-ray sales total spending: $25.81 million
DVD sales total spending: $85.76 million

                              These stats available from here:

                              Home Media Magazine

                              Top 10:

Blu-ray revenue and market share remain largely unchanged, as the dominant title this week was not a movie, but a TV show. True Blood Season 4 was the week's best selling title on Blu-ray, outselling the second placed Man on a Ledge by 2.5 to 1.

Two more titles graced the Blu-ray and DVD combined top 10, with Gone in 7th and Goon in 10th, but this order was not maintained on the Blu-ray only charts, with Goon in 9th, and Gone just failing to make the top 10, at 11th.

Coriolanus made the combined top 20 at 13th.

Alien Anthology made a return to the top 10, no doubt inspired by the release of Prometheus at the cinemas. The Lord of the Rings: The Motion Picture Trilogy also returned to the top 10.

Again, none of the 4 new movie releases managed to get anything near $100m at the box office, which seems to be the caliber of release needed to push up Blu-ray sales by a significant margin.

The complete top 10 chart is below (new releases in bold, and Blu-ray exclusives are denoted by *):
                              1. True Blood Season 4
                              2. Man on a Ledge
                              3. Red Tails
                              4. Alien Anthology
                              5. The Grey
                              6. This Means War
                              7. The Secret World of Arrietty
                              8. The Lord of the Rings: The Motion Picture Trilogy
                              9. Goon
                              10. Underworld: Awakening

                              Blu-ray Share:

Of the new releases, True Blood: S4 managed a Blu-ray sales share of 34% (and so a DVD sales share of 66%). This compares well with the last season's release on Blu-ray, that had a Blu-ray sales share of 25.27%.

Out of the other releases, Goon actually did best on Blu-ray, with 51.54% of sales belonging to the HD format. Man on Ledge got 44.32%, with Coriolanus getting 39%, and Gone getting 36%.

None of the new releases were available on Blu-ray 3D.

For the week ending 9th June 2012, here are the stats:

DVD sales total spending: $105.51 million

                                Top 10:

A "new release" heavy week, and even though only two of the new releases managed to get over the $100 million mark at the box office, it still helped Blu-ray revenue (and DVD revenue) rise to a multi-month high. In fact, the top 5 releases on both Blu-ray and DVD were new releases. it also allowed Blu-ray market share to rise above 30% for the first time since October of last year.

The relative box office flop John Carter was actually the best selling on both Blu-ray and DVD, although it only managed to just beat Act of Valor by a tiny margin.

Safe House was one of the movies that managed to break the $100m mark, and it was in a close 3rd place, some ways ahead of the 4th placed, and also $100m breaker, Journey 2: The Mysterious Island.

Completing the top 5 of new releases was Breaking Bad: The Complete Fourth Season.

There were a couple of new releases that did not make the Blu-ray top 10. These include Burn Notice: Season Five, which was a DVD exclusive, Machine Gun Preacher (finished 12th in the Blu-ray charts), Falling Skies: The Complete First Season (13th in the Blu-ray charts), White Collar: The Complete Third Season (another DVD exclusive), and Doc Martin: Series 5 (also a DVD exclusive).

The complete top 10 chart is below (new releases in bold, and Blu-ray exclusives are denoted by *):
                                1. John Carter
                                2. Act of Valor
                                3. Safe House
                                4. Journey 2: The Mysterious Island
                                5. Breaking Bad: The Complete Fourth Season
                                6. Alien Anthology
                                7. True Blood Season 4
                                8. The Dark Knight
                                9. Batman Begins
                                10. Red Tails

                                Blu-ray Share:

Part of the reason for the high overall Blu-ray market share was that the top 3 releases all managed to get over the 50% Blu-ray sales share, meaning each managed to sell more copies on Blu-ray than on DVD.

John Carter's 60.24% sales share on Blu-ray (39.76% on DVD) makes it one of the all time best first week performers on Blu-ray, but Act of Valor's 58.97% isn't too far behind either. Safe House got 53.62%.

Journey 2: The Mysterious Island's Blu-ray sales share was 40%, a respectable result.

Highlighting the growth of the Blu-ray format, Breaking Bad: S4 managed a Blu-ray sales share of 32%, up from 25% for season 3.

Both John Carter and Journey 2: The Mysterious Island were available on 3D, with John Carter getting a high 20% sales share for the Blu-ray 3D version (meaning 1 in 3 Blu-ray copies sold was the 3D version, and even more impressively perhaps, the DVD version only sold twice as much as the 3D version). Journey 2: The Mysterious Island managed a less impressive 8%, perhaps not helped by the $5 price difference between the two sets (now extended to $13).
