    Stats:

For the week ending 20th April 2013, here are the stats:

    Percentage of revenue:
    Blu-ray vs DVD: 29.53% vs 70.47%

Blu-ray sales total spending: $33.30 million
DVD sales total spending: $79.45 million

    These stats available from here:

    Home Media Magazine

    Top 10:

Blu-ray market share came within a whisker of going over the 30% mark, as DVD revenue also rose compared to last week.

The single title responsible for this upswing is Django Unchained. This isn't a total surprise, but what may be slightly surprising is the fact that this was the only new release in the Blu-ray top 10 for this week. As a result, it outsold the second placed The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey by nearly a 12:1 ratio.

Two other new releases made the combined Blu-ray and DVD top 20, but not the Blu-ray top 10. The Haunting in Connecticut 2: Ghosts of Georgia was 13th and 14th on the combined and Blu-ray only charts. A Monster in Paris was 20th on the combined chart, but didn't make it into the Blu-ray top 20.

So one big new release, and pretty much nothing else, was what the week was all about.

The complete top 10 chart is below (new releases in bold, and Blu-ray exclusives are denoted by *):
    1. Django Unchained
    2. The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey
    3. Lincoln
    4. Les Misérables
    5. Life of Pi
    6. Rise of the Guardians
    7. Wreck-It Ralph
    8. The Bible: The Epic Miniseries
    9. Zero Dark Thirty
    10. Skyfall

    Blu-ray Share:

Django Unchained did very well on BD compared to DVD, with a BD sales share of 54.29%, meaning only 45.71% of people purchased the DVD only edition of this movie.

A Monster in Paris got 24%, while The Haunting in Connecticut 2: Ghosts of Georgia had 23%.

None were available on Blu-ray 3D.

      Stats:

For the week ending 27th April 2013, here are the stats:

      Percentage of revenue:
      Blu-ray vs DVD: 27.57% vs 72.43%

Blu-ray sales total spending: $27.78 million
DVD sales total spending: $72.97 million

      These stats available from here:

      Home Media Magazine

      Top 10:

There were four new releases for this week, but none were big enough releases to topple last week's number one, Django Unchained.

Of the four new releases, Gangster Squad was the best seller on Blu-ray and DVD, and it managed to finish second in the Blu-ray charts.

In a distant third was A Haunted House.

The Impossible finished 4th on the combined Blu-ray and DVD charts, but 5th on the Blu-ray only chart where Promised Land finished 7th.

So without a real A-lister, and despite the number of new releases in the top 10, Blu-ray revenue and market share fell compared to last week, which isn't a real surprise.

The complete top 10 chart is below (new releases in bold, and Blu-ray exclusives are denoted by *):
      1. Django Unchained
      2. Gangster Squad
      3. A Haunted House
      4. The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey
      5. The Impossible
      6. Jurassic Park
      7. Promised Land
      8. Lincoln
      9. Les Misérables
      10. Wreck-It Ralph

      Blu-ray Share:

Of the four new releases, Gangster Squad had the best BD sales share, with 41.54% of all discs sales being on the BD/combo edition of the film.

Promised Land was the next best, with 39.30%. A Haunted House had 36.89%, while The Impossible managed only 27%.

None were available on Blu-ray 3D.

        Stats:

For the week ending 4th May 2013, here are the stats:

        Percentage of revenue:
        Blu-ray vs DVD: 27.69% vs 72.31%

Blu-ray sales total spending: $28.89 million
DVD sales total spending: $75.45 million

        These stats available from here:

        Home Media Magazine

        Top 10:

Blu-ray revenue and market share remained largely unchanged from the previous week, despite the release of what would arguably be considered an "A-List" release.

Silver Linings Playbook was the best selling Blu-ray title for the week, and one of only three new releases in the top 10.

In a distant second place, and selling less than half as many copies, was Broken City.

While it came 3rd in the combined Blu-ray and DVD charts, The Guilt Trip came in at 4th on the Blu-ray only charts.

The rest of the top 10 were made up of recent high profile releases, like Django Unchained, or movies related to hits currently showing at the cinemas, including The Avengers, Iron Man 2 and Star Trek.

The complete top 10 chart is below (new releases in bold, and Blu-ray exclusives are denoted by *):
        1. Silver Linings Playbook
        2. Broken City
        3. Django Unchained
        4. The Guilt Trip
        5. Gangster Squad
        6. The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey
        7. The Avengers
        8. Iron Man 2
        9. Star Trek
        10. Lincoln

        Blu-ray Share:

Silver Lining Playbook, while the best seller, did not have the best BD sales share compared to the other two new releases, with 39.63% of all disc sales being for the Blu-ray or combo editions of the movie. The best belonged to Broken City, with 40.85%.

The Guilt Trip trailed the other two with only 21%.

None were available on Blu-ray 3D.

          Stats:

For the week ending 11th May 2013, here are the stats:

          Percentage of revenue:
          Blu-ray vs DVD: 29.09% vs 70.91%

Blu-ray sales total spending: $34.24 million
DVD sales total spending: $83.48 million

          These stats available from here:

          Home Media Magazine

          Top 10:

Blu-ray revenue rose at a quicker pace than DVD revenue compared to the previous week, allowing Blu-ray market share to rise slightly.

A trio of respectable releases were largely responsible, with Jack Reacher leading the way on the Blu-ray charts.

On the combined Blu-ray and DVD charts, Safe Haven was the title that actually won top spot, but its relatively poor performance on Blu-ray denied it the Blu-ray win.

The third of the trio, and in a distant third place, was Mama.

Further down on the Blu-ray sales charts, in 5th place, was Superman Unbound.

Fringe: The Complete Fifth and Final Season ranked in the top 20 on both charts, but failed to make the top 10 in either (it was 15th and 14th on the combined and Blu-ray only charts respectively).

The complete top 10 chart is below (new releases in bold, and Blu-ray exclusives are denoted by *):
          1. Jack Reacher
          2. Safe Haven
          3. Mama
          4. Silver Linings Playbook
          5. Superman Unbound
          6. Django Unchained
          7. Les Misérables
          8. Broken City
          9. The Avengers

          Blu-ray Share:

Of the new releases, Superman Unbound managed the best BD sales share, with 61.85% of all disc sales belonging to the Blu-ray/combo editions.

Jack Reacher's 48.61%, compared to Safe Haven's 29%, was what allowed it to get the top spot on the Blu-ray only charts, despite the latter having had more total combined disc sales.

Fringe: The Complete Fifth and Final Season managed 38.57% while Mama got 36.93%.

None were available on Blu-ray 3D.

            Stats:

For the week ending 18th May 2013, here are the stats:

            Percentage of revenue:
            Blu-ray vs DVD: 26.71% vs 73.29%

Blu-ray sales total spending: $25.67 million
DVD sales total spending: $70.43 million

            These stats available from here:

            Home Media Magazine

            Top 10:

Blu-ray, DVD revenue and Blu-ray market share all fell this week compared to the previous week, as the box office failure Cloud Atlas was the best selling title of the week.

The box office flop seems to have done well on Blu-ray at least, outselling the second placed Safe Haven by more than a 2:1 margin.

This was another one of those light on new releases weeks, with only two other new releases making the top 10, neither of which were box office smashes. Texas Chainsaw was released on Blu-ray as a Blu-ray 3D only release (in addition to a DVD-only edition), and it came 4th.

Dexter: The Seventh Season was 7th.

Wrestlemania XXIX didn't make the Blu-ray top 10, coming in at 16th.

So not a week that contains a lot to talk about really.

The complete top 10 chart is below (new releases in bold, and Blu-ray exclusives are denoted by *):
            1. Cloud Atlas
            2. Safe Haven
            3. Jack Reacher
            4. Texas Chainsaw
            5. Django Unchained
            6. Silver Linings Playbook
            7. Dexter: The Seventh Season
            8. Mama
            9. Star Trek
            10. The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey

            Blu-ray Share:

Cloud Atlas managed a respectable 44.19% BD sales share, the best of the new releases.

Texas Chainsaw had 36.79%, with all BD copies containing a Blu-ray 3D version of the film (effectively making the Blu-ray 3D sales share 100%).

Dexter: Season 7 got 24%, while Wrestlemania XXIX was just slightly behind at 23%.

              Home Media Magazine

              Top 10:

A whole host of new releases, but none were what you would call box office smash hits, which will allowed Blu-ray revenue and market share to both rise compared to last week. In fact, there were 7 new releases in the top 10, and all of the top 6 were new releases.

In the battle for top spot though, the last one standing was The Last Stand, easily outselling the second placed True Blood: The Complete Fifth Season.

Closely behind the latest season of True Blood was Parker.

In 4th place was Beautiful Creatures, followed by Side Effects which narrowly beat Lego Batman: The Movie - DC Super Heroes Unite in 6th place.

Stand Up Guys was the last of the new releases, in 7th place.

The complete top 10 chart is below (new releases in bold, and Blu-ray exclusives are denoted by *):
              1. The Last Stand
              2. True Blood: The Complete Fifth Season

              8. Stand Up Guys
              9. Jack Reacher
              10. Safe Haven

              Blu-ray Share:

Of the new releases, Side Effects has the best BD sales share, with 45.93% of disc sales belonging to the Blu-ray or combo edition of the film.

The Last Stand was the next best, with 42.71%.

Lego Batman: The Movie - DC Super Heroes Unite had 39.16%, Stand Up Guys had 35.66%.

Beautiful Creatures and Parker had 31% and 30% respectively.

None of the new releases had 3D editions.

                  Stats:

For the week ending 1st June 2013, here are the stats:

                  Percentage of revenue:
                  Blu-ray vs DVD: 24.33% vs 75.67%

Blu-ray sales total spending: $22.36 million
DVD sales total spending: $69.55 million

                  These stats available from here:

                  Home Media Magazine

                  Top 10:

A very release light week, which resulted in Blu-ray revenue and market share reaching the lowest point so far in 2013.

Dark Skies was the only prominent new release for the week, and it failed to grab top spot, selling less copies than last week's number one, The Last Stand.

There weren't any other new releases in the top 10, but The Numbers Station did get as high as 15th on the combined Blu-ray and DVD charts. 'Bubble Guppies: Sunny Days!' was also new, but was not available on Blu-ray.

So there we go, a very quiet week indeed.

The complete top 10 chart is below (new releases in bold, and Blu-ray exclusives are denoted by *):
                  1. The Last Stand
                  2. Dark Skies
                  3. Star Trek
                  4. Parker
                  5. True Blood: The Complete Fifth Season
                  6. Cloud Atlas
                  7. Django Unchained
                  8. Safe Haven
                  9. Beautiful Creatures
                  10. Fast Five

                  Blu-ray Share:

30% of Dark Skies disc sales belonged to the Blu-ray or combo versions, a very average result, which probably contributed to it not being top of the Blu-ray sales charts for this week.

                  The Numbers Station managed 26%.

None of the new releases had 3D editions.

                    Stats:

For the week ending 8th June 2013, here are the stats:

                    Percentage of revenue:
                    Blu-ray vs DVD: 29.37% vs 70.63%

Blu-ray sales total spending: $36.06 million
DVD sales total spending: $86.72 million

                    These stats available from here:

                    Home Media Magazine

                    Top 10:

No less than 7 new releases in the top 10, 8 if you count a Walmart exclusive, and these helped Blu-ray revenue and market share recover from last week's lows. There were so many new releases that only one title from last week's top 10 actually managed to stay in this week's top 10.

A Good Day to Die Hard was the best selling title of the new releases on the Blu-ray format, even though it wasn't actually the overall best selling title, when you add in DVD sales, for the week. That was Identity Thief, which came first on the combined Blu-ray and DVD charts, but only second on the Blu-ray only charts.

The top 5 best selling Blu-ray titles for this week were all new releases. In a distant third place was Warm Bodies, which just managed to beat Escape From Planet Earth (which was only available on Blu-ray as a Blu-ray 2D/3D combo edition).

Further back in 5th place was the 5th season of Breaking Bad.

The Walmart and Blu-ray exclusive Die Hard: The Legacy Collection was in 8th place, just ahead of 12 Rounds 2: Reloaded and Falling Skies: The Complete Second Season.

So from a very quiet week last week, to a very busy one!

The complete top 10 chart is below (new releases in bold, and Blu-ray exclusives are denoted by *):
                    1. A Good Day to Die Hard
                    2. Identity Thief
                    3. Warm Bodies
                    4. Escape From Planet Earth
                    5. Breaking Bad: The Fifth Season
                    6. Indiana Jones: The Complete Adventures
                    7. The Last Stand
                    8. *Die Hard: The Legacy Collection
                    9. 12 Rounds 2: Reloaded
                    10. Falling Skies: The Complete Second Season

                    Blu-ray Share:

A Good Day to Die Hard came closest to breaking through the 50% BD sales share barrier, with 49.16% of all disc sales belonging to the Blu-ray or combo edition of the film.

The next best was Escape From Planet Earth, with 37.41%, followed by Identity Thief with 33.59%.

The other new releases failed to make it into the top 20 BD sales share chart.

Falling Skies: The Complete Second Season had 33%, while Warm Bodies and Breaking Bad: The Fifth Season both had 30%. 12 Rounds 2: Reloaded had 25%.

Escape From Planet Earth was the week's only new release on Blu-ray 3D that made it into the top 20 list. In fact, for Blu-ray owners, they could only buy the film as a Blu-ray 2D/3D/DVD/UltraViolet combo edition.

                    DVD: $106.01 million
Despite all the new releases for this week, it was an "all red" week, as everything fell compared to the same week last year. But it's not the number of releases, it's the quality of the releases, or rather, the quantity of the box office figures of the new releases, and last year had this year beat. Of the 5 new releases last year, 4 of them recorded a box office taking of more than $100m, compared to just a single release that managed to do the same this year (Identity Thief).

As a result, Blu-ray sales decreased by $9.59m (down 21%), while DVD sales decreased by $19.29m (down 18.2%) producing an overall loss of $28.88 million in combined revenue.

Even Blu-ray's market share shrank, from 30.10% to 29.37%.

For the week ending 15th June 2013, here are the stats:

                      Percentage of revenue:
                      Blu-ray vs DVD: 32.71% vs 67.29%

Blu-ray sales total spending: $47.68 million

                      Top 10:

The box office hit Oz the Great and Powerful easily became this week's top selling Blu-ray title, and helped Blu-ray, DVD revenue and Blu-ray market share to rise to a recent high.

Despite Oz's box office power, it only had a relatively small Blu-ray sales margin over the second placed Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters, thanks to the latter's superior performance on Blu-ray.

In a distant 4th place was Snitch.

Minnie's The Wizard of Dizz was also new on DVD, but it did not have a Blu-ray edition.

This week once again shows the importance of having A-list releases. Despite last week's 8 new releases, this week's 3, or rather just the one big one, managed to bring in more Blu-ray revenue.

The complete top 10 chart is below (new releases in bold, and Blu-ray exclusives are denoted by *):
                      1. Oz the Great and Powerful
                      2. Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters
                      3. A Good Day to Die Hard
                      4. Snitch
                      5. Identity Thief
                      6. Django Unchained
                      7. Skyfall
                      8. The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey
                      9. Jack Reacher
                      10. Warm Bodies

                      Blu-ray Share:

Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters managed a BD sales share of 56.07%, meaning it sold more on Blu-ray (and combo editions) than on DVD-only editions.

Oz the Great and Powerful managed 46.28%. Snitch had 29%.

Both of the top selling titles were available on Blu-ray 3D, with 3% of all discs sold for Oz the Great and Powerful being the 3D edition, compared to 8% for Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters.

                        Stats:

For the week ending 22nd June 2013, here are the stats:

                        Percentage of revenue:
                        Blu-ray vs DVD: 27.92% vs 72.08%

Blu-ray sales total spending: $30.69 million
DVD sales total spending: $79.23 million

                        These stats available from here:

                        Home Media Magazine

                        Top 10:

No A-list releases this week, despite a good number of new releases, meant that Blu-ray revenue and market share both fell compared to the previous week.

The week's best selling title was Jack the Giant Slayer, easily outselling last week's number one, Oz the Great and Powerful.

You then have to go to 4th place to find the next new release, which was 21 & Over.

The universally panned Movie 43 managed to get as high as 8th place.

There were a couple of new releases that finished outside of the top 10. Quartet's poor performance on Blu-ray relegated it to finishing outside of the top 20 Blu-ray chart, despite finishing 10th on the combined Blu-ray and DVD chart.

The Last Exorcism Part II at least managed to finishing within the top 20, at 16th.

The Walmart exclusive The Dragon Pearl was 17th.

The complete top 10 chart is below (new releases in bold, and Blu-ray exclusives are denoted by *):
                        1. Jack the Giant Slayer
                        2. Oz the Great and Powerful
                        3. Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters
                        4. 21 & Over
                        5. A Good Day to Die Hard
                        6. Identity Thief
                        7. Snitch
                        8. Movie 43
                        9. Despicable Me
                        10. Django Unchained

                        Blu-ray Share:

Jack the Giant Slayer finished with a 42.82% BD sales share during its first week, the best of the new releases. Movie 43 did okay on Blu-ray as well, with 39.29%.

21 & Over has 36.10%, with The Dragon Pearl having 32%, The Last Exorcism Part II on 28%. Quartet managed to do very poorly on Blu-ray, with only 9% of disc buyers choosing the high def version of the dramedy.

Of the new releases, only Jack the Giant Slayer was available on Blu-ray 3D, and 10% of all discs sold contained the 3D version of the film.

                          Stats:

For the week ending 29th June 2013, here are the stats:

                          Percentage of revenue:
                          Blu-ray vs DVD: 24.44% vs 75.56%

Blu-ray sales total spending: $23.76 million
DVD sales total spending: $73.46 million

                          These stats available from here:

                          Home Media Magazine

                          Top 10:

Both Blu-ray and DVD revenue, and Blu-ray market share dropped compared to the previous week due to a lackluster list of new releases.

You had to go to third place on the Blu-ray top 10 sales list to find the first new release, which was The Call - it was outsold by Jack the Giant Slayer and Oz the Great and Powerful.

In 4th place was The Incredible Burt Wonderstone.

And finally in 10th place was Upside Down.

So not exactly a sparkling array of new releases.

The complete top 10 chart is below (new releases in bold, and Blu-ray exclusives are denoted by *):
                          1. Jack the Giant Slayer
                          2. Oz the Great and Powerful
                          3. The Call
                          4. The Incredible Burt Wonderstone
                          5. Despicable Me
                          6. Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters
                          7. Identity Thief
                          8. A Good Day to Die Hard
                          9. Snitch
                          10. Upside Down

                          Blu-ray Share:

Of the new releases, surprisingly, it was the least popular title that had the best BD sales share. 44.03% of all discs sold for Upside Down contained a Blu-ray version of the film, but it just didn't sell enough copies to rise up higher on the top 10 sales list. The high BD sales number for Upside Down may have been due to the fact that all Blu-ray copies of the film also contained the Blu-ray 3D edition, a recent trend that may become more popular in the near future.

The Incredible Burt Wonderstone was the next best, with 39.95%.

Ironically, The Call had the worst BD sales share numbers at 26%.

While this week was decidedly average in terms of new releases, the same week from last year was a lot better, and featured the quartet of Wrath of the Titans, 21 Jump Street, Mirror Mirror and Oscar winner The Artist as new releases. And as a result, we have a rare "all red" week, as disc revenue, and Blu-ray market share were all worse off compared to the same week last year.

Blu-ray sales decreased by $7.79m (down 24.7%), while DVD sales decreased by $19.29m (down 20.8%) producing an overall loss of $28.59 million in combined revenue.

                            Top 10:

A super quiet week again, due to the 4th of July holiday, where the Blu-ray top 10 didn't actually feature any new releases at all.

In fact, you had to go to the 13th place to find the first and only new release in the top 20, which was An American Girl: Saige Paints the Sky.

In addition, in the combined Blu-ray and DVD charts, 6 Souls came in at 19th.

The release of Despicable Me 2 and Monsters University at the cinemas helped the originals get back into the top 10, with the former's prequel easily becoming the best selling Blu-ray for the week.

The lack of new releases made the week ending 6th July officially the worst week in 2013 in terms of Blu-ray revenue and market share.

The complete top 10 chart is below (new releases in bold, and Blu-ray exclusives are denoted by *):
                            1. Despicable Me
                            2. Oz the Great and Powerful
                            3. Jack the Giant Slayer
                            4. Identity Thief
                            5. A Good Day to Die Hard
                            6. Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters
                            7. The Call
                            8. Snitch
                            9. Monsters, Inc.
                            10. Escape From Planet Earth

                            Blu-ray Share:

The two new releases failed to make an impact on the Blu-ray charts because both releases did poorly on Blu-ray compared to DVD sales. Only 13% of all discs sold for An American Girl: Saige Paints the Sky were Blu-rays. 6 Souls did worse, at 12%.

Neither new releases were available on Blu-ray 3D.

The stats for the week ending 7th July 2012 are as follows. Some small adjustments to the data posted last year (based on more recent updates) has been made and is shown below.

                            Blu-ray: $22.64 million
                            DVD: $86.03 million
It was just as quiet this time last year, but this year's higher Blu-ray market share helped prevent this week from being an "all red" week (where all the measured stats shown below are down compared to the same week last year).

Blu-ray sales decreased by $0.54m (down 2.4%), while DVD sales decreased by $8.17m (down 9.5%) producing an overall loss of $8.71 million in combined revenue.

Blu-ray's market share grew, from 20.83% to 22.11%.

                              Top 10:

The week ending 13th July had a good number of new releases, but none where popular enough to significantly raise Blu-ray revenue and market share from last week's lows.

The Host was the week's best selling new Blu-ray release, despite coming second on the combined Blu-ray and DVD charts. First place on that particular chart went to Temptation: Confessions of a Marriage Counselor, which only managed to finish 4th on the Blu-ray top 10 chart; just below Dead Man Down.

In fifth place was Spring Breakers, with Admission in 7th and The Legend of Korra - Book One: Air in 10th place.

Also new to the week was Tyler Perry's The Haves and the Have Nots, which wasn't available on Blu-ray.

So quality is more important than quantity it seems, and by quality, I'm of course referring to box office results.

The complete top 10 chart is below (new releases in bold, and Blu-ray exclusives are denoted by *):
                              1. The Host
                              2. Despicable Me
                              3. Dead Man Down
                              4. Temptation: Confessions of a Marriage Counselor
                              5. Spring Breakers
                              6. Oz the Great and Powerful
                              7. Admission
                              8. Jack the Giant Slayer
                              9. Alien Anthology
                              10. The Legend of Korra - Book One: Air

                              Blu-ray Share:

Of the new releases, The Host had the best BD sales share figure, with 41.40% of all discs sold containing the Blu-ray version of the film.

Admission was the next best, with 39.54%, just above Dead Man Down with 37.51%.

The Legend of Korra - Book One: Air managed 34.22%. Spring Breakers managed 28.90%. And despite being the most popular title of the week on all disc formats, Temptation: Confessions of a Marriage Counselor only got 14%, which explains why it wasn't the best selling title on the Blu-ray foramt.

None of the new releases were available on Blu-ray.

                                Top 10:

Blu-ray revenue rose slightly compared to the last week, with DVD revenue remaining relatively flat, thus allowing Blu-ray market share to rise slightly. All of the top 3 titles, on both the Blu-ray only chart and the combined Blu-ray and DVD chart, were new releases.

The week's top selling Blu-ray title was 42, quite easily outselling Evil Dead. In third place was Bullet to the Head.

And that was pretty much it in terms of top new releases, although also new was Teen Beach Movie (which was a DVD and Walmart exclusive), and Hell on Wheels: The Complete Second Season which only sold enough copies to be 20th on the combined chart, and 14th on the Blu-ray chart.

The complete top 10 chart is below (new releases in bold, and Blu-ray exclusives are denoted by *):
                                1. 42

                                3. Bullet to the Head

                                5. Oz the Great and Powerful
                                6. The Host
                                7. Jack the Giant Slayer
                                8. Dead Man Down
                                9. Temptation: Confessions of a Marriage Counselor
                                10. Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters

                                Blu-ray Share:

Evil Dead was the best of the new releases when it came to BD sales share, with almost half (49.54%) of all discs sold containing the Blu-ray edition of the film.

Bullet to the Head was further back with 34.98%, while 42 managed 33.67%.

None of the new releases were available on Blu-ray 3D.
