    Stats:

For the week ending August 24, 2019, here are the stats:

    Percentage of revenue (MPN):
    Blu-ray vs DVD: 47.38% vs 62.62%

Blu-ray sales total spending: $26.23 million
DVD sales total spending: $29.13 million

    These stats available from here:

    Media Play News

    Top 10:

Blu-ray revenue fell back down to earth after last week's surge, as this week's top selling new release, Brightburn, was not a match for 'Avengers: Endgame' (but who is?).

'Brightburn', for all its efforts, only managed to finish in 3rd place (and selling 9 times fewer copies than 'Endgame'), just ahead of another new release, A Dog’s Journey.

The next new release, The Hustle, was in 6th place, while The Walking Dead: The Complete Ninth Season was in 10th.

Lego DC: Batman - Family Matters rounded off the new releases in the top 20 by finishing in 19th.

So hardly a stellar line-up of new releases, and Blu-ray weekly revenue dropped by more than $30 million compared to the previous week.

This week's Ultra HD Blu-ray report: Only 'Brighburn' had a UHD edition for sale. 7 out of this week's top 10 had a UHD edition.

The complete top 10 chart is below (new releases in bold, Blu-ray exclusives are denoted by *, UHD releases denoted by +):
    1. Avengers: Endgame+
    2. Pokémon Detective Pikachu+
    3. Brightburn+
    4. A Dog’s Journey
    5. Captain Marvel+
    6. The Hustle
    7. Alita: Battle Angel+
    8. *Batman: Hush+
    9. Shazam!+
    10. The Walking Dead: The Complete Ninth Season

Blu-ray, Ultra HD Blu-ray Sales Share:

BD sales share for a title is the percentage of disc packages sold for this movie that contained the Blu-ray edition of the film (including combos, and Ultra HD editions). So a BD sales share of 60% indicates that 60% of disc packages sold for this particular film contained the Blu-ray edition for this film, and so anything over 50% means that the Blu-ray version of the film was more popular than the DVD version.

'Brightburn' had a good BD sales share percentage as well, with 74.73% of all disc sales being the Blu-ray/4K editions.

The other releases didn't do as well, with 'Lego DC: Batman - Family Matters' coming closest at 52.59%, 'The Hustle' with 46.68% and 'A Dog's Journey' at 42.34%.

'The Walking Dead: The Complete Ninth Season' managed 41.89%, which was up from 39.36% for the eighth season (but down from 42.35% for the 7th season).

For UHD sales share performances, 'Brightburn' managed an impressive 21.59%, only failing to beat 'Endgame' (22.75%) in the UHD sales share chart.

An "all red" week in which every metric below was worse off than the same week a year ago. Somewhat understandable though given that 'Deadpool 2' was released this time last year, and top-selling new release 'Brightburn' was no match.

Blu-ray sales decreased by $18.38m (down 41.2%), with unit sales down 35.5%.

DVD sales decreased by $8.36m (down 22.3%), with unit sales down 19.1%.

This meant $26.74 million less in combined revenue for the week.

Blu-ray's market share decreased from 54.34% to 47.38%.

      Stats:

For the week ending August 31, 2019, here are the stats:

      Percentage of revenue (MPN):
      Blu-ray vs DVD: 49.14% vs 50.86%

Blu-ray sales total spending: $30.26 million
DVD sales total spending: $31.32 million

      These stats available from here:

      Media Play News

      Top 10:

Three medium-to-large releases this week helped Blu-ray weekly revenue to rise above $30 million.

Godzilla: King of the Monsters was the top seller, not just among new releases, but out of all titles (and yes, even beating 'Avengers: Endgame' - big titles such as this don't seem to have the same kind of staying power as they did in the past, like when 'The Force Awakens' was on top of the Blu-ray chart for weeks on end). It easily beat second placed The Secret Life of Pets 2 despite the latter being a bigger domestic box office draw.

The latter was also available in a 2-movie pack, which came 17th on the Blu-ray sales chart for the week.

Rocketman in 4th place completed the trio of movies mentioned previously.

And available in 4K for the first time with a stunning new transfer is Apocalypse Now: Final Cut, rising as high as 6th.

And finally, in 19th, was The Banana Splits Movie.

This week's Ultra HD Blu-ray report: Other than the 4K re-release of Apocalypse Now, all but 'The Banana Splits Movie' was made available on UHD. Every single title in this week's top 10 had a UHD edition!

The complete top 10 chart is below (new releases in bold, Blu-ray exclusives are denoted by *, UHD releases denoted by +):
      1. Godzilla: King of the Monsters+
      2. The Secret Life of Pets 2+
      3. Avengers: Endgame+
      4. Rocketman+
      5. Pokémon Detective Pikachu+
      6. *Apocalypse Now: Final Cut+
      7. Brightburn+
      8. Captain Marvel+
      9. Alita: Battle Angel+
      10. Shazam!+

Out of the new releases (and remembering that 'Apocalypse Now' counts as a Blu-ray only re-release, and a 4K one at that, so its Blu-ray and UHD sales sale will be nominally at 100% and not included in the Blu-ray market share chart linked below), 'Godzilla: King of the Monsters' had the best BD sales share with 66.75%.

It was just ahead of 'Rocketman' with 64.46%, which itself was ahead of 'The Secret Life of Pets 2' at 58.28%.

Even 'The Banana Splits Movie' managed a sales share of over 50%, just, at 50.90%.

'Godzilla: King of the Monsters' was also released as a Blu-ray 3D, but with only 1.17% of disc sales for this movie being the 3D edition, it begs the question "why bother?" (the answer, of course, is "because some people still watch 3D movies at home).

For UHD sales share performances, 'Godzilla: King of the Monsters' did well with 18.05%, 'Rocketman' managed 13.47%, while 'The Secret Life of Pets 2' got 6.14%.

        Top 10:

Despite the release of Men in Black: International, Blu-ray revenue fell compared to the previous week.

The latest MIB movie was one of four new releases in the top 20, with the next best selling new release being Ma in 7th.

Booksmart ranked 9th, while My Hero Academia: Season Three Part Two finished in 19th.

This week's Ultra HD Blu-ray report: Only 'Men in Black: International' was made available on UHD this week. 8 out of this week's top 10 had a UHD edition.

The complete top 10 chart is below (new releases in bold, Blu-ray exclusives are denoted by *, UHD releases denoted by +):

'Men in Black: International' did amazingly with regards to its Blu-ray sales share, 93.00%! A possible reason for this could be the relative lack of a premium the Blu-ray version has compared to the DVD edition (only $2 more on Amazon and the Blu-ray combo version includes the DVD version anyway).

'Booksmart' did well with 58.77%, while 'Ma' just failed to get over 50% with 48.44%.

For UHD sales share performances, 'Men in Black: International' did well too, with 16.16% - it's nowhere near as high as the Blu-ray sales share, but then the 4K edition had more of a price premium ($4 more than the Blu-ray version).

          Top 10:

A big hit, a big re-release, and a new chapter in a cult favourite series all helped this week to bring Blu-ray revenue close to $40 million, and for Blu-ray market share to go above 50%.

The 2019 remake of Aladdin topped the Blu-ray sales chart for the week, but it was only a narrow victory over a surprise hit (hitman?) John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum.

The re-release of the original animated Aladdin, on 4K for the first time, also did well and got a third-place finish (this was also a Blu-ray only release, as a DVD only release was skipped for this "Signature" edition).

It was these three titles that helped Blu-ray sales soar this week, and for unit sales to rise 76% compared to the same week last year.

There were two more new releases outside of the top 10. The Dead Don’t Die got as high as 14th, while the 4K re-release of Casino was close behind in 15th.

This week's Ultra HD Blu-ray report: Only "The Dead Don't Die" wasn't made available on UHD out of the previously mentioned new releases. Every single title in this week's top 10 had a UHD edition!

'John Wick: Chapter 3 — Parabellum' got 71.52%, while "The Dead Don’t Die" had to settle for 35.42%.

The others were all Blu-ray only releases.

For UHD sales share performances, it was the animated version of 'Aladdin' that had the best UHD sales share, 27.96%. 'John Wick: Chapter 3 — Parabellum' got 19.69%, while live-action 'Aladdin' managed 10.69%.

As a result of the lack of new releases, Blu-ray revenue dropped by $13 million compared to the last week.

              Top 10:

Blu-ray and DVD sales dropped slightly compared to the previous week, despite the release of Yesterday on 4K, Blu-ray and DVD.

The Beatles inspired movie only managed to get a 4th place finish though, failing to beat last week's top 3 sellers, 'Aladdin (2019)', 'John Wick: Chapter 3 — Parabellum' and 'X-Men: Dark Phoenix'.

In fact, 'Yesterday' only barely beat Anna in 5th place.

Child’s Play was the next new release at 7th, while Shaft was in 8th.

The signature collection editions of Sleeping Beauty and 101 Dalmatians got 9th and 10th place finishs respectively.

Rounding off the top 20, A Score to Settle finished in 19th.

This week's Ultra HD Blu-ray report: The signature collections didn't get a 4K edition, surprisingly, but 'Yesterday', 'Shaft' (Best Buy exclusive) and 'Anna' all had UHD editions. 7 out of this week's top 10 had a UHD edition.

The complete top 10 chart is below (new releases in bold, Blu-ray exclusives are denoted by *, UHD releases denoted by +):
              1. Aladdin (2019)+

Out of all the new releases this week, 'Yesterday' had the best BD sales share, with 60.09%.

                Top 10:

A big A-list release has helped Blu-ray sales leapfrog DVD sales for the week ending October 5, 2019.

That release was Spider-Man: Far From Home, which easily outsold everything else for the week.

In fact, the only title to get anywhere near this release was the Spider-Man: Homecoming & Far From Home 2-movie pack, in 8th place.

Otherwise, the top 20 was dominated by Halloween movies and a trio of first time on 4K releases, Guardians of the Galaxy (13th), Doctor Strange (14th) and The Shining (16th).

All of this helped Blu-ray market share to reach above 52% for the week.

This week's Ultra HD Blu-ray report: 'Spider-Man: Far From Home' was available on UHD. 6 out of this week's top 10 had a UHD edition.

The complete top 10 chart is below (new releases in bold, Blu-ray exclusives are denoted by *, UHD releases denoted by +):
                1. Spider-Man: Far From Home+
                2. John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum+
                3. Aladdin (2019)+
                4. X-Men: Dark Phoenix+
                5. Hocus Pocus
                6. Avengers: Endgame+
                7. Yesterday+
                8. Spider-Man: Homecoming & Far From Home
                9. *Sleeping Beauty
                10. *101 Dalmatians

'Spider-Man: Far From Home' managed a first week BD sales share of 80.00%, an excellent result. For its 4K release, it had a UHD sales share of 23.21%, an equally good result.

Crawl, in 4th, was the next best new release, followed by Stuber in 8th.

Scarface comes onto 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray for the first time as a 4K and Blu-ray only Gold edition, and it earned the classic a 12th place finish. Also outside of the top 10 was Teen Titans Go! vs. Teen Titans in 14th, the last of the new releases in the top 20 this week.

                        Top 10:

A quieter week this week in which you had to go to the 7th place to find the best selling new releases, which was Batman Beyond: The Complete Series, a Blu-ray exclusive release.

A 4K exclusive release was also in the top 10 in the form of the 80th-anniversary edition of The Wizard of Oz, in 9th place.

Yet another Blu-ray exclusive was in 13th place, Godzilla: The Showa-Era Films, 1954-1975.

And finally in 17th place we have 10 Minutes Gone.

This week's Ultra HD Blu-ray report: Only the 4K exclusive release of 'The Wizard of Oz' was available on UHD. 8 out of this week's top 10 had a UHD edition.

The complete top 10 chart is below (new releases in bold, Blu-ray exclusives are denoted by *, UHD releases denoted by +):
                        1. The Lion King+
                        2. Toy Story 4+
                        3. Spider-Man: Far From Home+
                        4. Aladdin (2019)+
                        5. John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum+
                        6. *Batman Beyond: The Complete Series
                        7. Hocus Pocus
                        8. 3 From Hell+
                        9. *The Wizard of Oz: 80th Anniversary Edition+
                        10. *Wonder Woman: Bloodlines+

Almost all of the new releases this week were Blu-ray/4K exclusives, all except for '10 Minutes Gone' which managed to get a BD sales share of 42.20%.

                        Year on Year Comparison

The stats for the week ending November 3, 2018 are as follows. Some small adjustments to the data posted last year (based on more recent updates) have been made and are shown below.

                        DVD: $34.20 million
Rising weekly Blu-ray market share helped to prevent this week being an "all red" week, in which every metric for this week was worse off than the metrics for the same week last year. The releases last year weren't that much bigger to be honest ('Batman: The Complete Animated Series - Deluxe Limited Edition', 'The Spy Who Dumped Me' and 'Teen Titans Go! to the Movies' in the top 10), but Blu-ray sales were still down 12.1%.

Blu-ray sales decreased by $2.39m (down 8.6%), with unit sales down 12.1%.

DVD sales decreased by $5.47m (down 16.0%), with unit sales down 20.8%.

This meant $7.86m less in combined revenue for the week.

Blu-ray's market share increased from 44.79% to 46.88%.

                          Top 10:

Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw easily topped the Blu-ray sales chart for the week, easily overcoming the number one of recent weeks, 'The Lion King'.

The next new release was in 4th place, Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark.

The Art of Racing in the Rain in 8th was the next new release.

Outside of the top 10, we have The Kitchen in 11th, Yellowstone: Season 2 in 14th and Good Omens in 15th.

So quite a few releases, but the one big one was driving most of the sales, with sales increasing slightly over the past week.

This week's Ultra HD Blu-ray report: Both 'Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw' and 'Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark' were available on UHD. 9 out of this week's top 10 had a UHD edition.

The complete top 10 chart is below (new releases in bold, Blu-ray exclusives are denoted by *, UHD releases denoted by +):

                          2. The Lion King+
                          3. Toy Story 4+
                          4. Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark+
                          5. Spider-Man: Far From Home+
                          6. The Secret Life of Pets 2+
                          7. Aladdin (2019)+
                          8. The Art of Racing in the Rain
                          9. John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum+
                          10. Avengers: Endgame+

'Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark' actually managed to beat 'Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw' in terms of BD sales share, with 59.26% vs 57.15%.

'Good Omens' got 48.62%, with 'The Art of Racing in the Rain' getting 43.36%.

'The Kitchen' had to settle for 39.98%.

For the two 4K releases, 'Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark' got a UHD sales share of 16.52% while 'Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw' got 11.66%.

                          DVD: $38.27 million
Every metric from this week was worse off than the same from a year ago, an "all red" week. This was because while 'Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw' did relatively well at the box office, but it was no match for the billion-dollar-plus 'Incredibles 2' from this time last year.

Blu-ray sales decreased by $13.73m (down 32.8%), with unit sales down 28.3%.

DVD sales decreased by $5.78m (down 15.1%), with unit sales down 17.4%.

This meant $19.51 million less in combined revenue for the week.

Blu-ray's market share decreased from 52.24% to 46.40%.

                            Stats:

For the week ending November 16, 2019, here are the stats:

                            Percentage of revenue (MPN):
                            Blu-ray vs DVD: 42.92% vs 57.08%

Blu-ray sales total spending: $24.29 million
DVD sales total spending: $32.31 million

                            Top 10:

Blu-ray sales dropped compared to the previous week despite the release of The Angry Birds Movie 2. The animated sequel managed to only get a 3rd place finish on the Blu-ray top 10, behind 'Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw' and 'The Lion King'.

4th place was also a new release, Good Boys.

In 6th place was The Big Bang Theory: The Twelfth and Final Season while Star Trek: Discovery - Season Two was in 7th.

Outside the top 10, The Peanut Butter Falcon was in 12th while 47 Meters Down: Uncaged finished in 16th.

So without any movies that were big box office draws being released this week, naturally, Blu-ray revenue dropped.

This week's Ultra HD Blu-ray report: Only 'The Angry Birds Movie 2' was made available on UHD. 7 out of this week's top 10 had a UHD edition.

                              Top 10:

Blu-ray revenue fell all the way below $20 million due to the lack of new releases, and perhaps the fact that this was a week before Black Friday, meaning many people will wait another week to buy something discounted.

Dora and the Lost City of Gold was the best selling new release for the week, coming in at second, but it was the only new release in the top 10.

You have to go all the way to 16th place for the next, and only other new release, Blinded by the Light.

This week's Ultra HD Blu-ray report: Neither of the two releases this week were available on UHD. 7 out of this week's top 10 had a UHD edition.

The complete top 10 chart is below (new releases in bold, Blu-ray exclusives are denoted by *, UHD releases denoted by +):

Blu-ray, Ultra HD Blu-ray Sales Share:

BD sales share for a title is the percentage of disc packages sold for this movie that contained the Blu-ray edition of the film (including combos, and Ultra HD editions). So a BD sales share of 60% indicates that 60% of disc packages sold for this particular film contained the Blu-ray edition for this film, and so anything over 50% means that the Blu-ray version of the film was more popular than the DVD version.

'Dora and the Lost City of Gold' had a BD sales share of 56.23%, while 'Blinded by the Light' got 46.79%.

The stats for the week ending November 24, 2018 are as follows. Some small adjustments to the data posted last year (based on more recent updates) have been made and are shown below.

                              Blu-ray: $104.77 million
                              DVD: $116.80 million
The big number above may seem weird, but that's because this time last year was the much fabled Black Friday sales week, which doesn't happen this year until next week. Suffice to say, the comparison below isn't really fair!

Blu-ray sales decreased by $86.54m (down 82.6%), with unit sales down 90.6%.

DVD sales decreased by $86.9m (down 74.4%), with unit sales down 86.4%.

This meant $173.44 million less in combined revenue for the week.

Blu-ray's market share decreased from 47.29% to 37.88%.

                                Top 10:

Not a big week for new releases, but the big numbers you see above aren't typos - the Black Friday sales are back!

As usual for Black Friday sales, the revenue figures become one of the best, outside of the holiday sales period.

And usually, there won't be any significant new releases, but Lionsgate didn't get the memo and they've released Angel Has Fallen, which was lucky enough to finish in 11th place.

Most of the top 10 were occupied by recent releases or discounted titles, with the likes of Aquaman (jumped from 33rd last week to 3rd place this week due to discounting), Godzilla: King of the Monsters (23rd to 5th), The Secret Life of Pets 2 (26th to 6th), Shazam! (38th to 8th), and Pokémon Detective Pikachu (28th to 10th).

More important than any particular new release this week is how well this Black Friday compared to the previous ones. Blu-ray revenue was $79.35 million this Black Friday compared to $104.77 million for the last one (down 24.3%). While last year was better than the year before, very likely due to many 4K discs being discounted for the first time, this year obviously was not as good a year.

DVD sales also dropped, but by a smaller margin, from $116.80 million last year to $96.89 million this year (down 17%).

Total revenue was down $45.33 million, or 20.5%. Worse than the $22 million fall last year and the $36 million fall a year before.

This week's Ultra HD Blu-ray report: 'Angel Has Fallen' was available on UHD, as were most of the discounted titles in the top 10. In fact, every single title in this week's top 10 had UHD editions.

The complete top 10 chart is below (new releases in bold, Blu-ray exclusives are denoted by *, UHD releases denoted by +):
                                1. Spider-Man: Far From Home+
                                2. John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum+

Another unfair comparison, but in favor of this week, as we're comparing a Black Friday week with the quieter Cyber Monday week from last year.

Blu-ray sales increased by $32.26m (up 68.5%), with unit sales up 142.7%.

DVD sales increased by $39.01m (up 67.4%), with unit sales up 127.4%.

This meant $71.27 million more in combined revenue for the week.

Blu-ray's market share increased from 44.86% to 45.02%.
