Using Copyright For Censorship: Fair Use and Free Speech Under Attack

The Electronic Frontier Foundation, a digital rights advocate, says that increasingly, companies and organisations are using copyright law to stifle free speech. They've even made a Hall of Shame list of all the "copyright takedowns" that they believe violates free speech and fair use doctrines, often used by groups to remove criticism and items which give them bad publicity.

"The Hall of Shame is meant to highlight some of the most egregious – the situations where the copyright owner really should have known better or a copyright owner is being particularly bullying", says Richard Esguerra, a spokesman for EFF.

It might be just another sign that copyright laws today are far too biased towards protecting the rights of content owners, that some of them have now started to use these laws to protect more than just their content.
