    Blu-Ray mkv file

so I have this mkv file. what do I need to convert it to a BD-R that I can play in my BD player for my TV?

I've searched for something to do with mkv files on this site, maybe I missed it.

    Thanks!

I'd start with this tool list:

Download free video and audio software. Old versions, user reviews, version history, screenshots.

Also look in the guides and forums there. I don't have a Blu-Ray DVD player yet so I haven't delved into the Blu-Ray DVD authoring and burning side of things.

you should be able to turn the mkv into bd compatible material/structure with tsmuxer within a couple of minutes

Gee castle, now since your post I have to try out all these 264 converters in the list!! My WD player can't seem to handle super high bitrates so I'm checking these out to see what's the easiest/fastest to compress while maintaining good HD quality.

Handbrake seems to produce pretty good results in one pass, but sometimes it crashes on conversion start. Plus some of the others claim to handle subtitles. It should be interesting.

Just for chuckles I'm going to try this and see what happens in WD player. If I could avoid 6 hour conversions that would be a big bonus.

the bitrate wont change actually so if you're having issues with high-bitrate material only the structure will be changed from mkv to avchd/bd and in case your wd doesnt like the high bitrates it wont help but maybe it will handle avchd/bd structures differently

I follow your reasoning. The bitrate issue was my assumption. I noticed though, that it seemed to have no difficulty pulling subtitles out of a standard DVD folder. It's too soon to say but I took the output of tsMuxer and tried it. It seemed to know which subfolder to go into to get to the video. I'm hoping this is because it expects to see a BD or DVD folder structure. Perhaps it is optimized to work with those. The playback is smooth with an m2ts file about 26 GB. I'll try a few more and hope this holds up. The other issue will be how well I can get it to work with subtitles. I watch a lot of Asian flicks with English Subs.

If they all work like this one it would be great. I'll take 10 or 15 minute remux over a 6 hours per pass reencode anytime.

I've tried tsmuxer now a couple of times and it seems like it works fine.

I'm a little unsure about which Output type to choose from the radio buttons under the Output section, I.E. TS muxing, M2TS muxing, Blu-Ray Disk, AVCHD Disk, Demux. ??

avchd will be the way to go if your final file size will be small enough to burn to dvd or dvd-dl

in this case output to avchd, burn to dvd / dvd-dl and enjoy the material on a blu-ray player (certain player will require a slightly changed structure - in case you have a Samsung for example make sure to delete AUXDATA folder)

if you want to burn to bd/bd-re then blu-ray may be the best choice

you certainly do not want to DEMUX your mkv (at least that's not what we talked about so far) and a pure trasport stream like m2ts wont be of much help either

My son gave me a Blu-Ray burner for Christmas and I don't want to make too many "coasters" before I figure out how to make it work!!

I'll try a few more things tonight. But, it looks like tsmuxer is the tool of choice so far.

                        Thanks!

btw just in case anyone is using WD player.. I've been using tsMuxer and producing .m2ts files for play on the WD player. They seem to play fine. No audio drops. Only thing is you can't FF @16x for long or the WD player hangs. I thought it may keep the last play position of files in that little database it makes when it scans the USB drive. Apparently it uses internal memory instead. If you have to cycle to power to clear a hang it forgets all that.

This player should really shine if it comes out in a USB 3.0 edition though.
By then they should have fixed the big bugs and the additional throughput should smooth things out.

When you say crashing are you talking about Handbrake?
I saw a comment on another board that suggested your odds of avoiding a crash are much higher if you accept the defaults. I just use the one pass mode and leave it at 60%.
