    AVI vs. others

I am a novice trying to convert a VHS tape to DVD but am uneducated as to which file format is best and will provide best chance at a clear and clean burn to blank DVD media. Using Windows 7 and using Arcsoft software that came with my converter device. Yes, cheap hardware but want to keep simple and inexpensive. Please comment on experience and benefits of different formats to help me select proper one(s).

DVDs use MPEG-2, so if the Arcsoft software has a profile for encoding to a DVD compliant MPEG-2 file, then that would avoid any re-conversion in the future (although this depends on your DVD authoring software). Otherwise, AVI using DivX/Xvid should be fine.
